Last Legacy

I'm not working on this level all by myself guys, I'm going to need some help. :P

Seeing as we're given the freedom to select any theme we want, what is the basis of our level? Are we doing a Platformer, Puzzle, Racing, Minigame, or what?

I honestly have no idea. LL is not really my league, so I probably won't go into the complex stuff, but I can provide my ramblings and (probably unrealistic) ideas.

Platformer is probably the easiest one to do, as that's what it's designed for, but probably just doing straight up platforming will not yield us the most points, considering how complex you can get into it. On eth other hand, we don't have much time and it'd be better to finish with something.
- We could have a level based around a single gimmick (I recall a difficult level with an airship), like a turret that has to clear the way for you, and you have to move/protect it.
- We could have a level, where half of it will be backtracking to the beginning, with some changed aspects of it (say, you go into a mine, set off an explosive when you picked up a rare gem and now you have to escape, while dodging falling rocks and perhaps have to find an alternate path, while being timed).
- Maybe some sort of sneaking mission, where you fail if the guards notice you (but that'd be kinda complex to do, since I don't think you can make enemy patterns... You could for NPCs). You'd have to distract them to pass unnoticed (turn on that light swich, so the guard has to turn it off).
Here's something that I made that basically makes a person turn around, on the same principle you could create a person moving (the spikes would be replaced with a detector that would cause a game over). I'd also recommend having separate "counting hit detectors" for each dude (though I don't know how that'll impact the performance of the game):

- Or maybe a level that has you get 2 keys, in whatever order, to face a boss at the end.

I don't really think we have enough space for racing. I'd assume it could be either dodging obstacles from left to right/up and down, or chasing after a platform (it could be something else idk). The latter could be incorporated into a platforming level, while the former would be simply too short (though if we were to do that, I'm imagining a DKC cart level, or that one level in DKC2 where you go up).

Puzzle or minigame, we'd have to think of an idea. I'm not really sure what's possible and what's not.
- It'd be really cool to have something like Obey, but that may be too complex for the time we have...
- Maybe something similar to Breakout, or Pong where you try bounce off an object for the longest amount of time or maybe catch it for points...
- Or maybe a level where you dodge bullets that are coming at you from the left or right, and as the time goes on they go faster and other hazards start entering (e.g. floor could be moving, like in that NSMB boss fight, or disappear completely, enemies could start showing up, gravity and wind could change), you'd have powerups appearing as items and they'd disappear after some time... But again, I don't know how much of that is possible and if we have time to do something like this.
- For puzzles specifically, I have an idea where you let the player go around explore an area (town or something) and then have them solve a mystery based on the clues they've gained (say, a guy buried something in the ground that will let you reach that bell tower you've been hearing about). That would also take a lot of planning, but would be simpler than a minigame.

I think we should know our limits and stick to something simpler, like a platforming stage, but not boring either. The challenge with LL is that in SM63 you had limited options as to what you could do, while in this there's suddenly so many options that a simple platforming stage will be overshadowed by other things. That's how I feel anyway.

I didn't think of Layton at all when I thought of that mystery town, but that would be a fair comparasion. I know you have only started making the level, but there is some sort of problem with that lighting (it either doesn't fade in, if you wanted to focus on Max, or the lighting is not there from the beginning). Also I'd recommend you to switch the invisible pillars into block items with alpha set to 0, so the ground doesn't react to it (in your version you can clearly see the grass separates).


In fact, here it is made as blocks (you only really have to change 1 line of code and change the walls into blocks). It works even if you go through a transition (though the intro text will repeat itself upon re-entering the trigger, so you may want to put a variable or something to check that.)

Ah, I wasn't aware about the lighting. The ground I knew about, but didn't know how to fix. Thank you. :D

And can anyone come up with some good puzzles that I could put into the level?

Alrighty, I fixed the lighting so it fades in towards Max this time.

I also found a way around that tile issue; I just remove the bottom tile. No mess. XD

I'll be working on the level (hopefully) twice a day at most, so there'll be plenty of updates and times for you guys to look for bugs (unless if you want to help me develop the level itself, then that would be great).

also do you guys know any good puzzles I can put into the level?

I'm going to sleep, it's 2AM here. I managed to throw this up in a couple of hours since I didn't see many major updates to the level and didn't want to end up submitting an incomplete level (no worries though, I know we kinda left you on your own). Should you need it, here is my level to submit as Team Magma's. A minigame about survival. Has some enemies, gravity switches and ♥♥♥♥. Should work fine, though there are some shortcommings (e.g. No warnings for gravity etc.)
