LL contest topic

Postby Supershroom » August 24th, 2015, 6:24 am

Gather round, fellows. LL has started and FF doesn't necessarily have to do everything, but due to Kab's absence he's still the clear No. 1 in terms of LL designing.

We can use this as we did for SM63 to look each other into our progress. And in case FF should meet an unforeseen interruption, I can back him up to continue his level. Or someone else.

Thank you, FF.

Rating standards: show
1 star: (0 - 5.75 in LDC) These levels need a lot of work. They're totally un-elaborated, and/or inherently flawed due to things like cutoff or enemy spam, or they're untested and there are too many bugs gameplay-wise, in short: Many many things went wrong in such a level.

2 stars: (6 - 9.75) These levels are not terrible, but poor. They're too short, lack scenery or they have errors and/or bugs but it's still barely enjoyable. Again, spend more effort and try to do better. (if it's your first level that I rate two stars, it's not bad. There's a long way you can still go)

3 stars: (10 - 12.75) These levels are about mediocre. They may be still a little bit short, the gameplay is fine but not very original and graphics are also solid, but not breath-taking. Try to keep improving!

4 stars: (13 - 15) These levels are nice, but not the best. Effort has been put into them, there can some professionality be seen in gameplay and graphics, they're a nice experience to play, but there are still things you can do to make it even better. Try to go the extra mile!

5 stars: (15.25 - 20) These are really great levels, those which, as said, I would give more than 15 in an LDC. These suffice many high requirements, and it already goes into subtleties if you want to make them better. These levels are successful all around. Bravo.

These are just general principles I try to follow when rating. Sometimes I don't leave a further comment when rating, most times I do, if you have questions about it, feel free to ask further.

Alright guys. Let's do this.

I'm still thinking of a way to build the main structure. Not sure what will be the size of the level, will work on this NOW, and will get the structure ready, so you guys can take a look and also have ideas of what to do with it. We'll leave the details for later; Kaboom is going to help me on the Gameplay (as we already kinda combined but I don't know if he will be active to maintain his promise) and Shroom is going to help me on Graphics, later on.

But REMEMBER: ANYONE can help. MoD, Jumbo, FL, if you guys have nice Gameplay ideas, or have been brainstorming about cool sets of fractals, please say it here. I'd really like to have so much help from this team, specially because there's so few time and because this entire week is full of exams for me (this doesn't mean I won't do anything though, in fact, I'll do my best).

also shroom can you please change the topic title to L³DC Topic so it stays the same from the SM63 topic and my OCD doesn't bite you

perfect description for my feelings about the LL designer right before the 3rd LLLDC came

Since the size is restricted, I'd suggest doing something with trigger usage to walk through the level multiple times (backwards / forwards or up and down and areas slightly change, difficulty alters or other puzzle mechanics). Maybe a long-stretched 200x20, or a vertical 40x100 tower or a sole friggin puzzle area a la PULSE in a 63x63 square. A funny thing I've already thought of is recoloring the entire level or some areas of them after hitting a switch or the like, by having multiple color boxes and moving them into the level or outside of it.

EDIT: congratz on veteranship, Jumbo

Lawl OK. But still, if you have any cool ideas you once had for SM63 levels but couldn't execute them there, feel free to say.

Please no 63x63 puzzles, lmfao. It took me so much work to plan and do everything in 25x25 when I was making P U L S E, now just imagine the work with 63x63.

However, ideas are coming to my mind. I have an idea of what I will do, however it's not really complete.

ploop

Alright. I have an idea of what will the structure be, and basically it's going to be multiple different areas where you can go back and forth to explore and find out puzzles and what not. I kinda had in mind Shroom's idea of using triggers to unlock new things in other areas.

Also this is how the Graphics is going to look like (not the level itself, just the color palette and the elements)

I need op onions for now
