spammers dont allways spam just to advertise, i've seen in some forums and websites with commentaries such as youtube, have spammers that try to spread rumors around by telling someone something like this;
Post this comment in 10 other games and something will happen!
but those are just small rumor spams i find on my favorite game website. most spam is just for advertising though.
and about the whole scaring off spammers or users using the chat, i was accused of being a bot by SOMEBODY!
I wont call out any names. no seriously, i wont.

There are many types of spammers. One of them is advertising.
