Kim's Markup & Smiley Help Guide

Postby Kimonio » February 26th, 2010, 5:51 pm

New users come and go. Most stay and chat. Most also wonder how the heck we do markup and such.

That is why I am here. I along with other regular members will guide you through this guide as you venture on the quest to use our smilies and markup! ;D

I: IMAGE POSTING

PART 1-Smileys and the rules of usage

Section A- The History of Smileys

"The very first yellow Smiley Face was created by Harvey Ball in 1963. He was hired by an insurance company to design a face to be used on buttons and cards in order to raise employee morale. It is noted that it took him 10 minutes to create the design, earning a $45 fee.

The Smiley gained huge popularity in the following years, becoming an international icon by the 1970's and securing a place in pop culture for the coming decades.

The growth of the Internet and the development of modern computer image formats allowed the Smiley to move online, cementing a place in Internet culture. Hundreds of thousands of graphical smileys have been created for Internet use, many of them animated. While the original smiley was all about happiness and creating a smile, all sorts of smileys are in use today. Even though the Smiley came to life some two decades before the Emoticon, there is no evidence that the creation of the first text emoticons were influenced by the Smiley."

Section C- Smileys Usage Rules

1- The Smiley should NEVER be used for spam
2- The Smiley should NEVER be used for insults
3- The Smiley should NEVER be abused in the chat
4- The smiley should ONLY be used when properly needed
EXAMPLE A- lol tht lvl wuz crppy :P
^^NEVER ABUSE THE SMILEY!!!^^
EXAMPLE B- Well, in my most honest opinion, that level could use some work. There were errors here and there. Enemy spammage also creates a low score. May I ask you something: When you post your levels, do you ever test them? :|
^^CORRECT USAGE^^

PART 2- Images and The Rules of Usage

Section A- What are Images?

"A graphical entity which can be displayed in a document or a WEB PAGE. There are a number of formats used for storing images. On the World Wide Web(WWW) the two most popular are the Graphic Interchange Format(GIF) and the Joint Photographic Experts Group(JPEG) format."

New tricks! :D

Okay, so we have this reply in our signature or post. Now, we may want to link that quote to the post we quoted. Now, how do we do this?

Simple!

1- Get a quote you want to link from to the origin
2- Paste it
3- Find the URL of the message. It should say something along the lines of- viewtopic.php?f=FORUM&t=TOPIC NUMBER#pPOST NUMBER
4- As usual, do the
Code: Select all
[url=URL OF POST]QUOTE[/url]
trick
5- Now, here is the special part! Take the quote and put it between the URL tags!
6- Preview
7- ????
8- PROFIT!!

Now, say you want to link by using the author. How would you do so? SIMPLE! Just follow steps 1-4! :D Only this time, put the url= part after quote= but before the "USERNAME" part.

I'll use one of my favorite Niklaw's Tavern quotes as an example for each.
Code: Select all
[url=http://runouw.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1504&start=1510#p23110][quote="Niklaw"]Ahh, I see you're having spaghetti TBG, that's nic--- Wait a minute... We don't serve spaghetti yet! MIC, where did you get that raw spaghetti from?!

*MIC whispers something in my ear*

*Eye twitches*

[size=200]THAT WAS MY PERSONAL COLLECTION OF SPAGHETTI STICKS THAT LOOKED LIKE FAMOUS CELEBRITIES!!![/size]

I.. [i]*twitch*[/i] spent ten years... [i]*twitch*[/i] building that.. [i]*twitch*[/i] collection... [i]*twitch*[/i]

That.. [i]*twitch*[/i] said, I just..[i] *twitch*[/i] went out and.. bought... [i]*twitch*[/i] a few.. boxes of.. [i]*twitch*[/i] spaghetti... [i]*twitch*[/i]. You can now... [i]*twitch*[/i] order it here..

*Faints*[/quote][/url]

Now for the second trick-

Code: Select all
[quote="[url=http://runouw.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1504&start=1510#p23110]Niklaw[/url]"]Ahh, I see you're having spaghetti TBG, that's nic--- Wait a minute... We don't serve spaghetti yet! MIC, where did you get that raw spaghetti from?!

*MIC whispers something in my ear*

*Eye twitches*

*Faints*[/quote]

They will come out as.......
