Runouw Votes Discussion

Don't worry it's nothing to do with stopping RV. We're just currently looking for ways we can change the system a bit to make it fairer, and after discussing this a little with other mods we think it's a good idea to get some community input. After all, Runouw Votes is a community event. So at the worst it may be delayed a bit, but not to worry.

So originally I made the topic in F23. I wanna aim the discussion around these following points:

~MP3 Amplifier~ wrote:I did PM Buff a little while ago asking if he'd like to host this coming Runouw Votes, which is supposed to start today, but he suggested that he could ask the community about what they would like to see that's any different in Runouw Votes, because I think last time me and Star took a lot of the medals...and it would be nice if we could try to vary the categories a bit more so other users have a fairer chance of winning something.

So yeah, firstly I would like your ideas on how to get a better variety of RV winners. Here are some ideas of my own:

~MP3 Amplifier~ wrote:If we do get a big discussion going, we may have to delay the votes a little while. I wouldn't want it to stop altogether, because like LDCs, they've been going a while and it's become a bit of a tradition. One of the things I thought might be helpful would be that people who place 2nd or 3rd with above 10% in the polls could get medals too, but the downside is that could make it seem 'easier' to get an RV medal than it was before since a lot more would be handed out.
I was thinking we could make a limit to how many categories a person can be nominated into, which I think would work better. We could give a limit of 3 so at the very most someone could win 3 RV medals, and since there are a lot of categories there are still lots of other medals that can be handed out, and hopefully to a variety of members.

This idea I would like to carry out, not for this Votes, but for the January one afterwards:

~MP3 Amplifier~ wrote:Also I'd like to separate the best level designer awards, one for SM63, one for LL. Not so much for this one, but for the January one because by then we may have had a few official LL contests, LL may be finished by then and except for the really prolific LL designers in the portal atm, not many people are paying much attention to it. So I was hoping that we could make that an official category in the next Runouw Votes. But it's just an idea for now.

So yeah. Feedback and comments are appreciated and the sooner things are decided, the sooner we can begin this half-year's Runouw Votes awards.

As far as limiting how many times someone can win, I suppose all nominees are eventually chosen by the staff in charge, and anything I say is immediately suspect considering the armfuls I've left RV with, tehe. But I think we should find a balance between "playing everyone wins" and "nominating whoever deserves it". I don't recommend trying to do every single thing like I dabbled in during my prime, but if someone is great and impact full at... Everything, they've earned their nominations. I don't think someone who is a great designer, artist, topic maker, smart and nice should take hits because they do too much. At the same time, I know how much confidence it instills to even be nominated, much less win, so I understand the sentiments of spreading the love.

I like the sound of making things broader in order for more people to get a chance.

I'll still get jacksquat but hey-ho, the ones who really deserve their nominations will win.

to me, we shouldnt pile level designing in with thecommunity awards, since not a lot do that anymore. ive taken a route involving graphics and writing, and the ld categories could be pooled with an ld contest maybe. i also feel like the categories should be restricted a bit, or split them down further if needed, maybe also put a cap on the max medals of a season a user can win, to make things a bit more fair. or limit how many different categories a particular user can be allowed to be voted in by the public....maybe if there are more than three, take the three with the most times nominated for that? and possibly seleft categories that interchange seasonally or yearly, maybe be randomly drawn if needed.

those ae just my suggrstions off the top of my head.

I disagree with your point about level designing. While its true that most 2009-10 users have either slowed down or stopped completely, there's still 3 years of users to account for.

I don't really agree with any restrictions you want to add. I mean, if a user wins a lot of medal, it must deserve it, must have put a lot of time and effort in what he does, and these medals are a way to reward him/her for that. If someone were to raffle all the medal, some restriction could be made, but the maximum of medals a user ever won in RV was rarely 3 or 4. Once again, he/she is a user that put effort and time in what he/she does. We can't really stop a person if that person is good at what he/she does.

Plus, aren't we already restricting since that time when* it was decided that mods would choose the nominees?

I suppose we are. There are mod-chosen categories anyway.

The main dilemma that I see is the actual categories. Perhaps we can change them a bit with details such as dates and activity. Okay there may be more users getting medals, but I've seen competitions where they choose a winner from each age group. I'm not talking about the members' actual age, but maybe it could be split into how long they've been on the forum or how many posts they have etc.

Idk, this is just a very basic idea right now and I'm not so sure if I'd go with this particular one. But it is a change that could work in our favour and I'm interested to know if we can find anymore using this.

I guess this would be fairer. We could have like a "Best New Level Designer" or something, but not everyone actually checks the Level Portal.
