Just gonna compile everything we know/want changed here in a single post so that I (or anyone else) can easily just link it to Suyo whenever he feels like answering us next. So far, we've had no luck... Maybe it's time to let him know that this affects more than just a few people? If you, like me, are growing impatient, show your support below or try contacting him yourself. Let's get this sorted.
THE PROBLEM:There is a limit on the number of users (3) who can simultaneously connect on a single IP. If exceeded, all members currently using that IP to connect are kicked and temporarily banned for an hour. New connections are refused with the error "session limit exceeded".
A number of B-O-T's services also do not work correctly, returning erronous information when used. Commands we know do not work properly include ".yt" (Youtube search) and ".tr" (translator).
We also request a method of communication that is
guaranteed to reach you, every single time, regardless who uses it, within a few days AT MOST.WHY IT'S AN ISSUE:This limit did not exist in the past, when more people used Mibbit on a regular basis. Now that we have a functional on-site chat that is attracting attention, kickbans have been much more common, preventing existing members from using the chat without tedious workarounds and alienating new members who are interested in participating. The IP used by ProjectDiva members (46.252.24.218, could.suyo.be) appears to be unaffected, suggesting this is a problem with the server configuration and not an issue with the webclients we use (Mibbit and KiwiIRC).
B-O-T is one of the main features of the chat, and sees extensive use, particularly the search functions.
Additionally, the only person we know of with the power to look into this seems to have dropped off the face of the planet, despite attempts to reach him both on the IRC itself, Steam, and Twitter. (EDIT: You appear to respond to Raz and Raz only... sometimes. ) Pretty far from ideal.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE:Ideally, increase the session limit per IP for the addresses used by our members to match that of the addresses used by Project Diva members. For Mibbit, they are:
- 207.192.75.252 (ircip1.mibbit.com)
- 64.62.228.82 (ircip2.mibbit.com)
- 78.129.202.38 (ircip3.mibbit.com)
- 109.169.29.95 (ircip4.mibbit.com)
For KiwiIRC, they are:
- 195.154.52.250 (m-b.clients.kiwiirc.com)
- 195.154.53.5 (m-c.clients.kiwiirc.com)
- 212.83.148.225 (m-a.clients.kiwiirc.com) This one exists, but has never been seen in chat as far as I know. May not be needed.
Currently the limit should be 3. It should be as simple as finding the relevant line in the config files, changing that to an 8 (or some other suitably high number), saving, then restarting the IRC server. We know the server runs UnrealIRCd, which I have gone ahead to find
the documentation for, as well as what looks like a promising place to start:
maxperip (optional, but recommended)
Allows you to specify how many connections per IP are allowed to this server (ex: maxperip 4;).
If this isn't enough, I also found
a lot of information concerning increasing the limit with Mibbit addresses, I assume it would be the same procedure for KiwiIRC.
Finally, Suyo. We have tried contacting you through IRC, Steam, and Twitter. We have seen you online. We have not received a response, either to notify us that the issue has been fixed or with a satisfactory answer as to why such an arrangement is possible for PD users but not for us. I can't believe that you honestly have no idea how to do this, or are too busy to do something that should take five minutes at most (I mean, I've never done any of this before and seem to be headed in the right direction at least)... You are the only person with the power to change this, and frankly, it seems like you're just avoiding us now. If you want us gone, say so, but otherwise, we feel it is your responsibility as host to at the very least check in from time to time when issues like this arise.
LONG TERM PLANS:As some of you might be aware, there has been talk about finding another server for our chat, one that would ideally be maintained. It's still in the very early stages of discussion, but it would likely be about the same as our current chat setup, just with more active host(s) for when things like this happen. It's not anything to worry about yet, but we'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter! Is it something you think would be beneficial for our community? Why, or why not? Would you be able to chip in a little to cover running costs? Let us know how you feel here.
EDIT: Added some other small things, might as well continue using this post as a collection of the problems, our proposed solutions, and what information we've found.
