Forum Chat Topic

Welcome, forum citizens! If you're looking to get to know the rest of the community, you're in the right place. Keep reading to find out what the chat is, how to avoid being kicked, and most importantly how to join.

Alright, so, our chat has gone through a looooooot of changes, especially in recent months/years. Now, finally, we think we've found something that works. What is it you may ask? Discord, a voice and text chat service similar to Teamspeak or Mumble. Now I know what you're thinking, we just had a perfectly adequate IRC chat, so...

Why should I care?

In no particular order:
  • It's completely free.
  • It supports both high quality voice chat and plain text chat.
  • Huge cross-platform support:
    • Web version if you don't want to or can't download anything.
    • Windows, Mac, and Linux clients if you're a desktop kinda guy.
    • Android and iOS apps for your mobile needs.
  • Ridiculous customization:
    • Want a darker or lighter theme? You got it.
    • Want to turn notifications on or off? Yup, that's a thing too.
    • Do you want to change your name, let others see when you're playing games on steam, or even have new messages read out loud to you by text-to-speech? You better believe there's options for all of that.
  • Images and youtube videos preview in chat, this can be turned off.
  • We manage our own channel directly, no going through a middleman.
  • We can control troublemakers (this is an ENORMOUS benefit over IRC).
  • You can be connected to multiple servers, and multiple channels per server:
    • To add onto this, you can even talk in one voice channel while typing in a text channel- even if they're on completely different servers.
  • It is still in development and is constantly seeing improvements based on ideas suggested by the users.
    • That's right, you can actively participate in making it even better.
  • Official bot API to be released eventually.
  • There's even a widget to embed it on the forums.
  • Literally everyone on the IRC has already made the move- what are you waiting for?

So what's the catch?

Well... There isn't one. Discord takes the good features from all our previous chats- high quality, lightweight voice chat from Mumble; the accessibility of IRC; and the logging capabilities of Skype- and rolls them all together. If you really want something to complain about, there are a few things these other programs do better. It doesn't have video calls like Skype, and you're a bit more limited than an IRC, but the vast majority of users who have tried it agree that this is hardly a dealbreaker. And again, it's still in development, so maybe we'll see those features in the future.

I'm sold- how do I get in on it?

We're still figuring the specifics out, but for now you can join by clicking the link below. Friendly reminder that forum rules still apply- a summarized version may be found below:

  • Do not post threatening, hateful, obscene, or illegal material. Children use this site, and we don't need a lawsuit.
  • Name changes are allowed in moderation, but you must be recognizable. This can be as simple as using your forum avatar.
  • Be polite. Spamming, flaming, and impersonating another user will not be tolerated.
  • Chat users should be registered and not banned on the Runouw forums. If your friend wants to join, encourage them to register first. We don't bite :p
  • Use common sense. If it isn't allowed on the forums, don't do it on the chat either. If you're unsure about anything, ask around first. Failure to comply may result in being kicked from the channel; severe cases may result in a ban.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

    HOW IT WORKS:
    Our chat is an IRC server shared by us and our sister forum, ProjectDiva, and would not be possible without retired Global Moderator Suyo's generosity. In a nutshell, this means you can connect to chat in a number of ways (see "HOW TO JOIN" below), and that there will probably be members of another community on at the same time as you (don't worry, they don't bite :p) Chat Moderators are Suyo, Aznchau4ever, and Raz, but they may grant powers to other users if they will be away.

    CHAT GUIDELINES:
  • Do not post threatening, hateful, obscene, or illegal material. Children use this site, and we don't need a lawsuit.
  • Name changes are allowed in moderation with /nick NEWNAME, but you must be recognizable. For example, I could change my name from Venexis to Venexis|Away or Ven, but not CoolGuy12.
  • Be polite. Spamming, flaming, and impersonating another user will not be tolerated.
  • Channels can be made or joined with /join #CHANNELNAME. Some channels may have additional rules, if you are unsure, message the channel OP for clarification. You can leave channels with the /part command.
  • Chat users should be registered and not banned on either the Runouw forums or ProjectDiva forums (or both). If your friend wants to join, encourage them to register first. We don't bite :p
  • Use common sense. If it isn't allowed on the forums, don't do it on the chat either. If you're unsure about anything, ask around first. Failure to comply may result in being kicked from the channel; severe cases may result in a temporary ban.
    • The full rules as defined by the server host can be found here.

HOW TO JOIN:

    ON-SITE CHAT(beginner users):
  • STEP ONE: Click here or the Chat button at the top of any forum page to reach the sign in.
  • STEP TWO: Enter your username in the "Nickname" field, then click the "Start..." button to join the chat.
    • Alternately, if you are registered on the ProjectDiva forums, you can immediately talk on the chat found at the top of every page without any setup at all.

    KIWI IRC(intermediate users):
  • STEP ONE: Click here to go to the Kiwi IRC sign in page.
  • STEP TWO: Enter your username in the "Nickname" field, and click the "Start..." button to join the chat.
    • You can also replace the "nickname" in the URL with your nickname before creating a bookmark, this will automatically fill in your username for you.

    DOWNLOADABLE IRC PROGRAM (advanced users):
  • STEP ONE: Download, install, and launch your favorite IRC program. Chat users can help with this if you're new to the process.
  • STEP TWO: Configure your client to connect with your username to server address irc.greencouchgames.net, port 6667.
  • STEP THREE: Save and connect to the chat.

BACKUP CHAT:

In case the chat is down for any reason, the Runouw CyTube will be the backup chat service. More information about CyTube can be found here.

REPORTING A PROBLEM:

We are currently in the process of testing certain features of the chat. If you encounter a bug, can't connect, suspect there may be an impostor online, need help, or simply want more information, please let us know here.

Additional Information (Chat mods see here):

Here you can find many useful commands to keep the chat running smoothly.

  • Register your current nickname -- /msg nickserv register PASSWORD EMAIL -- Prevents other users from taking or abusing your nickname.
  • Sign into your registered nickname -- /msg nickserv identify PASSWORD -- Access OP or other additional powers granted to your nickname by the channel owner.
  • Recover your registered nickname -- /msg nickserv recover NICKNAME PASSWORD -- Kick the imposter out, so that you can reclaim your nickname.
[/list]
**Please sign into your nickname at least once every 30 days to avoid losing it! If this happens you will need to re-register your nickname and re-acquire OP or other additional powers from the channel owner.**

Pretty sure this is everything, mods please edit if I missed something.

Ok, this is devolving into a bloody civil war, and I cannot let that continue. I am taking that poll as overall permission to move forward, and I'm moving the new chat into the official page. Like it or not, this is the last day on Suyo's server.

Final actions over there will include setting the topic to a link to our chat page (which will be connected to the new address), so that anyone from PD that wants to, can find us here.
~Doram

Current discussion on new server migration:The discussion has been heated on a few people's parts, mostly Raz and OJ who are against it mostly because it is unnecessary (it may be), and Ven and I who want to solve the problem while it is still a small problem, and not when it becomes a big one (which it might not). Serious discussion starts here.
Phase 1 Testing (as of 4/18/2015):
We are testing out a new home for the chat, and MK has helped us with the first steps. (MANY thanks for the help!!)
The new location is irc.dal.net and the room is titled #runouw
(And if you only use the Chat Page to connect, here's one of those for the test server: New Chat KiwiIRC Test Page)

Phase 2 Testing will begin once I figure out how to put a bot on the new channel. Keep an eye on this post for future updates.

News as of 4/21: The Poll showed that people were fairly solidly on the side of moving over, with 14 Yes, 14 IDC, and 0 No.

Further steps have been taken, as Raz, Venexis(Vendai), nin10mode, and AznChau4ever(Chaukai) are made Chat Moderators.

Hey guys, Ven here. You may know me from posts such as this. Well, it's that time again. Yaaaaaaaaaay.

As outlined in the link above, IRC is utterly dead. The only daily activity our community sees is the Skype group, which has a ton of issues (again, see the above link). This bothers me on a profound level, and I'm not alone. It's an almost weekly topic- Skype has encouraged movement from the IRC and forums to an exclusive community, in the process barring new users from interacting with our veterans and making out forums look, well, comatose.

What can we do? To answer that, let's look at what we've got. We've got an IRC that will hopefully be implemented on site soon. We've got an amazing and varied userbase. And we've got forums. What I propose is simple. If you're like me and more than a little annoyed by this, MAKE A CHANGE. Boycott Skype, use the IRC. Reach out to new members and find some common ground, some shared interest. Contribute to the forums, give people a reason to want to join us.

In short, do the exact opposite we've been doing these last few months. If you want things to change, change them. Be visible on site, not in a community that's segregated from everything we've got going on here. USE THE IRC CHAT- this goes for veterans as well as new members, simply enter your Runouw username when prompted and hit connect. Why should a new member stick around a dead forum, and why should Suyo finish a chat nobody uses.

It may not be a complete solution, but it's better than what we're doing now: hiding. Whether we choose to follow through on it or not is another matter. I can't force anyone to make the effort, but if you care about the forums, the community, or the future of the site at all, it is definitely something to consider.

EDIT, added the IRC link. Also can someone please sticky this since it actually contains a working chat link and there doesn't appear to be one yet, stickied or otherwise?

Yeah I'm with you. I don't have, and/or can't use Skype, so I've not been able to talk to anyone. The IRC is essentially AniLo and Raiyunni ping-ponging off each other.

Just halelujah, people finally coming back. I was tired of waiting hours for anybody and if I was lucky I could catch BY,Rayuuni or AniLo to chat with. There's a new guy who just made his way to the irc and chatted with him like yesterday, but the ammount of people online was disturbingly small. I wouldn't use skype and tbh I'm not even online on it, like ever. Keep skype for more...personal stuff and please use the irc. It'll probably drag more attention to the site for other users aswell.

If you can find me software that lets me switch between Skype and IRC without having to run an extra process, I'm all for this.

All for this regardless, I just still use Skype because I don't really go on any other IRC channels, so it'd be nothing but a waste for me to download and install a client just for here.
(Ajax for life, though)

Here's an updated version of Fodu's Runouw mIRC layout. Too lazy to type my own explanation of how to do it so I'll use fodu's.
Spoiler: show
How to get this:

First, make sure mIRC is closed.

Find the directory in which mIRC stores its settings.
For Windows, this is C:\Users\ACCOUNTNAME\AppData\Roaming\mIRC (replacing ACCOUNTNAME with your computer account's name).

In there, you'll find mirc.ini. Open this with Notepad.

Look for [colors]. Underneath, you should see something like:
n0=mIRC Classic,0,6,4,5,2,3,3,3,3,3,3,1,5,7,6,1,3,2,3,5,1,0,1,0,1,14,6,0
n1=mIRC Modern,0,6,4,7,2,3,4,3,3,3,3,1,5,2,6,1,14,2,3,5,1,0,1,0,1,14,5,0
n2=Monochrome State,1,15,15,15,15,15,15,15,15,15,15,15,15,15,15,15,15,15,15,15,15,1,15,1,15,15,15,14,1,15
n3=Placid Hues,0,2,4,7,2,3,3,3,3,15,3,1,5,7,6,1,3,2,3,5,1,0,1,0,1,15,6,0
n4=Rainbow Sky,0,7,4,5,1,1,3,3,8,13,3,14,2,7,13,5,3,8,3,4,14,0,5,0,3,14,10,0

Add to the bottom:
Code: Select all
n5=Runouw,9,10,4,13,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,15,13,7,6,15,2,2,2,13,1,15,1,9,15,15,6,15,15,1

Now directly underneath, under [palettes], add:
Code: Select all
n5=16763904,0,43775,52224,238,10040319,13382553,26364,3407871,3355443,48998,16744466,3368601,127,4473924,16777215

Now scroll to the very bottom, and look for [local]. Directly above that, add:
Code: Select all
[cnicks]
n0=Suyo,3,,,0,0,0,0,0
n1=_MP3_Amplifier_,3,,,0,0,0,0,0
n2=Buffooner,3,,,0,0,0,0,0
n3=MP3,3,,,0,0,0,0,0
n4=Aznchau4ever,7,,,0,0,0,0,0
n5=nin10mode,7,,,0,0,0,0,0
n6=Yoshi_Boo_118,0,,,0,0,0,0,0
n7=Star_king,0,,,0,0,0,0,0
n8=Nwolf,0,,,0,0,0,0,0
n9=Triple_J,0,,,0,0,0,0,0
n10=Venexis,6,,,0,0,0,0,0
n11=UsuarioTHf,6,,,0,0,0,0,0
n12=brandobrawl,6,,,0,0,0,0,0
n13=Doram,6,,,0,0,0,0,0
n14=SuYo1141,6,,,1,1,0,0,0
n15=Raz,6,,,0,0,0,0,0
n16=Runouw,4,,,0,0,0,0,0
n17=_Mario_,4,,,0,0,0,0,0
n18=_Luigi,3,,,0,0,0,0,0
n19=_Yoshi,0,,,0,0,0,0,0
n20=,11,,,1,1,0,0,0
n21=,14,,,1,1,0,0,30

Make sure they're separated by new lines.

After that, save, and launch mIRC. Click on the View tab, choose Colors..., and you should find "Runouw" in the schemes drop down list. You should now see the colors.
Now go to the Tools tab, choose Address Book, Nick Colors, and check Enable Nick Colors. You should see name colors now.

You can fiddle around in those two windows too, to customize the colors in your own way. You could give yourself GloMod green to boost your epeen, or give Avo a bright pink name. You could also be like Kevin and somehow fail spectacularly enough to set a bright eyerape green background.

If you want to change font, go to View, Font..., and set it to whatever you want. In the above image, it is Arial, Bold, 10 pt font, and I think the old chat used something similar.

If you want timestamps, go to Tools, Options, IRC, Messages, check Timestamp.

So yeah, if you don't have mIRC, GET IT NOW. It has cool stuff.

The only thing I actually changed was the [cnicks] part :p

Wow guys, gotta say I'm seriously impressed with the turnout for this. It's a million times better than I dared hope for day one.

That being said, this needs to become the norm. By all means still use Skype when you're playing TF2 or Minecraft or just to chat, but the bulk of community talk should take place on the community chat.

Still requesting a sticky for this, even it it means I'd have to rewrite the OP to include things like the IRC rules and how to join. Something as big as our chat should definitely be right up top in plain sight.
