Runouw Census Idea

Well, I had the idea to make a census here in Runouw, to see how many users are currently active in the site. Why? ...Not sure, but having that number might be nice, I guess.

I had the idea to like, have a topic where anyone active could make a post. Or something. That would be simple enough I guess. What do you think?

We're actually doing a user cleanup September 1st. (hopefully) It should delete any users who haven't been active/responded to the email in a certain amount of time.
Here's the e-mail:
Hello users of Runouw.com,

It has come to our attention that we have thousands of inactive, non-posting users. As these accounts do nothing but take of space and make active users harder to track down, we have decided to remove all user accounts that have never posted on the forums. If you have posted, but it is only in Off-Topic or in the level portal, we urge you to post a welcome post to introduce yourself to the community as well as to protect your account from deletion.

This will go into effect on September 1st 2014.

According to Nin and Buff, 1203 users will be left after this.

So you're going to delete old designers who only posted in the portal, deleting a magnitude of portal levels, or people who only posted in Off Topic awhile back...

Instead of working around that.

Glad we only found out about this NOW

Give a us a work-around, we're all ears.

EDIT: I honestly don't know about the portal, I wasn't the one who sent out the PMs. Keep in mind that everyone was given one month of notice. They were sent out back on July 26th.
EDIT2: I didn't even realize no one was told about this before. I really wish not everything was kept a secret.

Heyyy. Alright, so, yes, this has been a thing for a while. I'm not sure if it was kept to F23 or not (if it was, what the ♥♥♥♥? Isn't the goal of this to get people's attention?) but posts such as this can confirm it is in fact working.

Thing is, it was only sent to users with zero posts. None of the 1203 or so members who have made posts at some point in the site's history would have received one. It was a tough call to make, but there are a few reasons why I feel it's valid.

For one, the email does specifically state that posting in Off-Topic or the level portal is not enough to save your account. People have had over a month at this point to log in, check that, and rectify it if they wish. But you did raise a very good point that nobody had anticipated, what does happen to levels submitted by a user if that user is deleted?

I genuinely don't know how to handle this, because nobody seems to know what would happen to those levels. It seems to be the determining factor of whether or not we should ultimately go through with it. Regardless, there's a lesson here- this could have been entirely avoided by letting people know what the staff (who do not have the ability to anticipate everything) had planned. There was no reason to hide this, and every reason to not hide it.

At the very least we should perhaps pick a zero-post member who has submitted levels to the portal, email them the level code, and see what (if any) consequences arise. Time is really ticking now.

Levels from the old portal aren't deleted along with their levels.

The old portal isn't linked to anything anymore. It is just an archive of levels, listed with their authors, the last score and difficulty rating they had, and the number of votes given to reach those ratings. If it was still linked to the userbase and game, it would most likely tamper with how the current portal works.

All that is being deleted are users.

I totally disapprove of all of this. First, noone is forced to post anywhere, and second, though you may never use your account to post something, it still gives you advantages such as viewing user profiles and searching levels faster.

Nonono, you're missing the point. If you guys haven't noticed, Spambots haven't been here for almost a year thanks to Suyo. (it was a suprise to us too) Once we remove all the users who haven't done anything, spambot or not, it'll let us have a clear view of our ACTUAL userbase. Sadly, we do not have 62811 actual users. Less than 10% of our users are even actual users.

If you're a lurker, make a new account. All this does is give us a clear view of who is actually registered on our forum. Although, you don't need to see anyone's profiles. And nor do you need to login to search for any levels. I don't see why you'd register on a forum and not use the forum.
