The results are in...

Well, pretty close, so I decided on this:

- the new chat layout looks like the chat archive. Mouse Over on a chat message to get a tooltip with the time.
- there will later be an option in the profile to choose beetween old and new layout. Good or Awesome?

Now choosing your own layout is better. So there won't be any hassle.
