In the game portal (Which is a modified engine of Half Life 2, I think) You use a gun to shoot portals and solve puzzles. In the game you are guided by an A.I called GLaDOS which tells you that you will get cake after beating all of the puzzles.

However at the end, without spoiling anything, instead of having a party with cake like GLaDOS promises, events happen and the party well...never happens. Thus proving that the cake is indeed a lie.

The Cake is a lie is used instead of anything else because on one of the walls in the game is writing that says 'The Cake is a Lie'


Now it is one of the most commonly used phrases on the internet, I didn't know why until a few days ago.

You know what's wierd, Super Mario 64 and an episode of Kirby of the Stars have something relating to this phrase. In Super Mario 64, Mario gets a letter that he's going to have cake at the castle but when he gets there... he needs to save peach first. In an episode of Kirby of the Stars, Kirby is going to eat a cake in this one scene. However, there was a demon beast in it. I think "The cake is a lie" was inspired by these scenes.

The cake lied in paper Mario the thousand year door if you remember in Glitzville. It will also lie in new smb wii if you saw the opening cutscene. In super mario rpg even, you had to fight a cake. Can you think of more instances where cakes lie?
