HOWEVER, making the arrows consumes quite a bit of wood and stone and if your making a house this early most people make it out of wood.
Plus in my opinion the swords knock back is a bit better than the bows.

On another note, n my ranger character I am living in the jungle, yeah first thing I did in the game was run to the jungle ( luckily no corruption ) and set up a invisible base ( AKA no base ). So mining can be a ♥♥♥♥♥ sometimes as early in the game hornets and man eaters are erm, rather fun. This is my version of early hard mode.

Get a grappling hook as soon as possible. As soon as you have one, that really gets your movement going. You can search for treasure and hearts more easily, or you can head into the corruption with some dynamite and smash shadow orbs to get better items that way. Just don't smash more than 2 yet...

Get grappling hook, go to corruption, be on guard, go down chasms, look for the big cavern chasm, look around for hearts and chest. I say that because I used to find a lot doing that.

Or do the alternative and get a grappling hook, get 200 hp minimum and 15 defense minimum. Go to hell and look for more hearts. It's not impossible, I id it and came out with 340 hp and a fiery great-sword. Don't complain that my items were op, they weren't, my best weapon was vilethrorn. And my sword was gold and my pick was demonite.

Those are the more advanced and thrilling options lol.

Something I like to do when I start over is build a mining tunnel down into the ground while it's nighttime. It's good to do that because:
1. You'll be safe from monsters (for the most part, at least)
2. You'll be gathering a bunch of materials (like dirt and stone)
3. You may find some valuable ores (like copper or iron, which are valuable for the starter)
4. You can slightly modify the tunnel and use it as a hellovator later on in the game (PROFIT!)

But make sure to build the tunnel so that you can get back out and you don't get hurt. Here's a screenshot of my tunnel that I'm building with a new character:

A good way to build a tunnel is to dig six blocks down, two blocks over, and repeat (shown in screenshot). That way, you can get back out of the tunnel without the need for any jumping aides, such as a grappling hook or extra blocks.

What I do is dig straight down with a bunch of wooden platforms, and then when you're ready to jump, position your cursor directly under you, jump as high as you can and place once you're at the peak. Repeat until surface. Saves you the direction changes, requires more wood.

That's a good tactic too. Either one works, it's just a matter of which one you like better.

I'm not saying those are the only two ways to build a tunnel, however. I'm sure there are plenty more ways.

Protip: to farm zombies, make a little hut with a door on each side, and wait. Tons of zombies should come and knock on the door, and then you can sword 'em/spear 'em. The best thing is, zombies never leave as long as they have a door to hit, so there's no worries about having to venture out to hit the zombie that walked away!

...yeah that was obvious.

EDIT: So I got the Nurse... does that mean I actually DEFEATED the EoW yesterday when Nin blew up?

You get the nurse after getting an additional heart of life.
You get the dryad after killing a boss.
