Shortswords have a very short range and only attack in front of you, which is pretty bad in case of group attacks or anything that you will encounter later on. You should use Broadswords. They are slower, but generally longer and more useful. You won't have the choice, as shortswords rapidly become useless because all the good melee weapons are broadsword-like. But if you enjoy stabbing, you should enjoy Spears, found in world-generated chests. They are basically the same, except they have a longer range, can attack in any direction, and spears are still great weapons even at the end of the game.

I remember when I accidentally made a lead shortsword once. I regret never taking the time to realize the difference at that point.

I honestly love the really fast fire rate of the shortsword, and how you can combo with it really fast unlike spears. I still have a lot of ranged stuff and a few magic things a friend gave to me, but the shortsword doesn't seem that bad. Then again it reminds me of Link's Adventure's 2-D combat system, so that seems more familiar.

If you're honestly okay with it, you should continue using it, regardless of what people tell you. :p

However, it does become ridiculously impractical later in the game, and you will almost certainly ditch it in favor of a swinging blade with better range. Especially against very fast/flying enemies who are very difficult to hit repeatedly due to the fact you need to be level with them to hit.

You're good right now with magic/ranged, but neither of those is a very reliable replacement for a heavy-hitting melee weapon to clear away enemies in your immediate area for no cost at all. I think you're fighting a losing battle, but these kind of games were meant to be played the way you enjoy. Good luck.
