If they retain the technology originally installed in the console - the DRM software - it is possible they may indeed follow Steam's path: that is, allowing game publishers to opt for DRM software on their games. Thus, while the console will not require DRM, some games may employ it nontheless.
Based on Microsoft's actions, it seems unlikely they would remove the technology from the console all together this close to release.
As far as predicting which games, if any, will have DRM if the new Xbox does indeed imitate Steam, my best guess would be the usual employers of the software on Steam games, such as Electronic Arts.
Keep in mind that companies have undoubtably noted the wide-scale backlash against DRM. In some cases, consumers have attempted to make the DRM appear as counter-productive by pirating games equipped with DRM, when they otherwise would not have.
DRM may continue to be employed by certain publishers, but it is far from the "future of gaming," and I believe Microsoft will react to the current enviorment accordingly.
