New Super Mario World Hack

Postby Zunar » July 1st, 2013, 8:57 am

So a couple years ago I made a Super Mario World hack that focused a ton of precise jumps (link). After getting a ton of negative feedback regarding all the precise jumps, I decided to scrap that hack and start over with a new one. This one aims to be more like the original SMW difficulty-wise. The starting levels are a little more difficult than the original, but it shouldn't be so bad that an average player couldn't pick it up and play.

Besides a difficulty tweak, here's what the hack features:
  • Completely redesigned levels (for the most part, some minor areas were just tweaked slightly)
  • Custom overworld (except past World 1, the rest is identical to the original minus the YSP)
  • Custom music

NOTE: There is a slight issue with the custom music, particularly in the castle and boss battle music. At the beginning of the track there might be a short static-like sound, so watch out. I'm not sure how to fix this, maybe someone on Super Mario World Central can help me out.

If you do try this out, feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Apply the patch to a HEADERED (U) rom.

SMBX is not hacking
SMBX is not SMW

I'd love to check out this hack, but I don't have SMW right now.

(where can I find SMBX?)

You've infected me with a new obsession. Oh my god, there's so much you can do. XD

At least it isn't keeping me from playing Super Mario 63... and doing my job here. :troll:

...On topic, I'd like to try this hack out too, (I'd try any hack out, actually) but I don't know if I'd be able to acquire everything that is necessary to play any hack. If I could, I'd love to give some feedback though.

First off, you need an emulator. I personally recommend Snes9x.

Second, you need the rom of whatever game the hack is of. In this case it's obviously Super Mario World. A quick google search should get you one, though you need to make sure it's the correct region and that it has a header. I can't provide a link since that would be against the site rules IIRC, but what I can tell you is that if you google "Super Mario World rom", the first result will get you the right rom. Some people will insist that the "correct" way is to purchase a copy on a Wii and then dump it onto an SD card via homebrew (*coughMKcough*), but honestly I don't care how you get it.

Next, you need an unzipper program such as WinRAR and WinZIP to extract the ips out of the zip file.

Finally, put the ips and rom in the same directory and name them the same (e.g. zmw.ips and zmw.smc), and open the rom using Snes9x. Voila, you should be set.

(No, I mean Snes9x. Snes9x is more accurate and the music sounds better on it. ZSNES is faster and a little more user-friendly, but it cuts a lot of corners and for the most part the sound quality is bad. Compare running Chrono Trigger in Snes9x versus ZSNES and you'll see what I mean.)

I start the hack with a bonus game. After I got the 1-ups,nothing happened and I got stuck in the bonus game.

I started here:

Looks to me like a patching error, that looks about the spot where Mario starts in the original game. Since there's no level there, entering just leads you to the endless bonus game.

Did you make sure you applied the patch to a headered (U) rom? An easy way to tell would be to right-click the rom and open Properties. A headered rom should be 1,049,088 bytes, whereas an unheadered rom is 1,048,576 bytes.

Also make sure that the game isn't trying to load a save file from the original, that would mess things up too.
