WickedOreo wrote:Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that a lot of those games don't have that anymore. Yeah, they're not going to all be RPGs, but whatever happened to Metroid and Megaman's quality? They were-and still are- well-loved games back in the past, but they are ruined. So is making Sonic into all these things- such as a knight- that he really isn't. What the hell is a blue hedgehog doing in a suit of armor and wielding a sword, not trying to defeat Eggman? Seriously.
Also with Link. They absolutely bombed it in Skyward Sword (I hate the graphics and the plot). Granted, I haven't played that much of it, but from what I've read, it was boring and really went out of the way to exemplify the relationship between Zelda and Link, which should have never happened. Oh, and the control was really bad for me, especially when panning the camera and actually using his sword.

Megaman didn't suffer a drop in quality, just a drop in developer support.

Also, don't you think it's a little short-sighted to assume that the entire Zelda franchise is butchered because of one mediocre game? People thought the same thing about Naughty Dog when they released Uncharted 3 (actually a great game on its own but didn't hold a candle to previous iterations). People actually threatened to boycott future Naughty Dog games because of how mad they were. But lo and behold, Naughty Dog delivered The Last of Us last month, which was a complete masterpiece.

I have played Skyward Sword myself (and actually beaten it) and I agree it wasn't on par with previous Zelda games, but it's an awfully quick jump to judgement to say that one sub-par game represents the downfall of the entire franchise. Let alone the entire game industry.

By the way, I say give SS another shot, unless the controls just completely break it for you (they were fine for me). The plot is forgettable, but the game does have its moments.

I may be going off-topic here, but I remember Skyward Sword being so well received when it came out, and now it's getting a lot of hate. What happen

Back to the subject, I will agree that DLC is, for the most part, a lazy way for developing games (there are a few exceptions that I hold). However, the older games that had add-on content was usually due to space limitations (though like today some games had time limitations like Sonic 3 & Knuckles), in which they would either have to release an add-on disc/cartridge or a new game entirely.

I played it for two hours and I got to the surface finally in about that time in SS. It took me about five minutes to just get up on the damn roof and get Mia, and I tried playing with both hands (I tend to be ambidextrous when using a mouse/touchpad and consoles, even though I'm dominantly left-handed), and it was extremely hard to move around and pan the camera around. Of course, I was playing on the Wii, but still, it shouldn't be borderline impossible to move and take so long just to get items.
The graphics were hideous, very reminiscent of Wind Waker. Twilight Princess' graphics would have been more desirable, much more desirable because they actually looked good. With technology nowadays, virtually anything can be put into a CD or card without limits, so why'd they be lazy asses with Skyward Sword? I also never saw the point of introducing a goddess in the game, either. I'm sure someone can tell me why, but it just made Zelda into almost quite literally the Bible Games all over again. We don't need that rainbow haunting our lives, don't we?
And for future reference, I know who AVGN is and watch his videos.

The Bible Games comparison seems a bit ridiculous if you ask me, but I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Honestly for games like Legend Of Zelda, I prefer the cartoony Wind Waker graphics. I ♥♥♥♥ love those kinds of graphics.

But guys we should get back on topic now.

Every franchise puts out ♥♥♥♥ games ocassionally. Other M, anyone?

It's probably just a coincidence that all of the bad ones seem to be coming out lately, though. After all, Other M and Skyward Sword were both supposed to be new concepts, right? Focusing more on origins than continuing the series. They're not bad games, but definitely sub par when contrasted to the amazing history of their respective franchises, so when they were released and the fans found out they were merely good instead of incredible, I imagine that felt a lot like betrayal.

This^

People got the bad habit of over-elevating their expectations when an incredible game come out. And when that happens, their is a 99.9% of chance that the next game will be seen like a bad game. Most people will do comparison of a game with an another one instead of evaluating a game alone.

Of course, there is games that are bad (Sonic 06 and the horrible CD-i Zelda games) and that is also some companies that got bad ways (EA and Activision), but I still find it a shame that some good games are overlooked or hated just because they are lightly below other games of the same series.

Also, to take back on what WickedOreo said, FE:Awakening do allow you to have past characters via Spotpass. (10 or 11 from each games, with only 1 characters being only accessible in a DLC) The characters obtained in DLC got only different artwork and skills. Of course the DLC got special content such as unique skills and ranks as well as having maps giving additional challenges or giving you the ability to grind to help you in Lunatic, but it isnt as bad as other DLC practices in other games *coughcapcomcough*

I thought Other M was good. Nothing spectacular and definitely not a good Metroid game, but as an action game it was good.

Skyward Sword I really enjoyed. I had no problems with the controls - in fact they were great -, it had a great art style, some excellent content and the inclusion of some light RPG aspects was nice. It's not my favourite LOZ game, as that would have to go to ALTTP, and it had its fair share of problems: backtracking, refighting the same bosses, some lacklustre sidequests, FP sword pointing and underused skyworld. It's by no means a bad game.

There are loads of quality recent games as well as there being loads of quality retro games. You can't judge an entire generation on a few games.

@Oreo
Just curious as you talk about RPGs - specifically JRPGs - have you played more recent titles such as Xenoblade, The Last Story or Ni no Kuni?

No I haven't because I don't play newer games, mostly because of financial issues and I only own a DSi XL, Wii, and PS2 (that I'm unable to use because I have no T.V. to plug it into).
