What are some good PSX games?

Postby Zunar » August 5th, 2013, 7:01 pm

The other day I found a Playstation at a thrift store for $10, cords and everything. Also had a controller, but it was one of those ♥♥♥♥ off-brand ones. Today I went to the used game store I know of and got a memory card, a legit controller, and Chrono Cross.

So I'd like some suggestions on PSX games to try out. I'm planning to hopefully find a copy of Final Fantasy 8 and possibly Metal Gear Solid, but other than that I don't really know of any good games for the system. Suggestions?

(please don't suggest any Final Fantasy Anthology, I've got plenty of other versions of those games. Speaking of FFA, the translation of FF5 in Anthology is extremely ♥♥♥♥ and pales in comparison to the GBA version. I don't care that the music is lower quality, the GBA version is hands-down, no contest, the best version of FF5. But let's not get off-topic here. Point is, pls no FFA. kthxbai)

If you're into JRPGs, then I'd recommend trying out Persona 1, unless you have the PSP version which got rid of a lot of the stupid localization changes and fixed some of the translations (but for some odd reason they left out a few parts of the original soundtrack). I would also recommend the Crash Bandicoot games and the Spyro games if you're into platformers (or racing if you get Crash Team Racing). There's also the Twisted Metal games, which I've heard are pretty fun. That's all I can think of for now.

Quoted for great ♥♥♥♥ justice.

Also get the Megamal Legends games, Metal Gear Solid, Klonoa, Resident Evil 1-3, and Legend of Legaia is a great RPG.

@2UP: Hahahahaha ;)

@Topic: You'll most likely hear repeats of the same games, but I'll recommend you a few games you can pick up (beware some links may have spoilers in them, but I tried to give you mostly intro stuff) ;)

Crash Bandicoot is a 3D platforming game. It's not free-roam like Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie, it's more like an overhead style. The basic idea was to turn classic sonic into 3D and it worked really well. Worlds are very well designed and the game has good amounts of challenge. Crash 1 is hard to complete if you want 100% and Crash 3 is on the easier side (however some additional challenges make it challenging too). I've never played Crash 2, but it's Naughty Dog, you can't go wrong ;)
Crash Bandicoot 1 - Level 1

Spyro games are more like Banjo Kazooie, a 3D, free-roaming collectathon. You are a young Dragon who has to go through several worlds and collect items or rescue dragons. It is more like a Mario 64 world, where everything is joined through portals, unlike Crash which is more streamlined. The worlds are expansive, the games are not very challenging, but they were fun nevertheless.
Spyro 1

Someone already mentioned Metal Gear Solid, it's a 3D cinematic stealth game. It is a game about a spy called Solid Snake, in which you must infiltrate the base and find a weapon of mass destruction called Metal Gear. I have not played it myself, but from what I hear it's very good and challenging.
MGS1

Final Fantasy 7, most popular, and most hated among fans because of that popularity. I really enjoyed the game, the graphics might be a bit outdated (especially the characters), but the story, the battle mechanics and the music are still as great as they were 10 years ago.

Same goes for FF8. It has different battle mechanics to FF7 and people tend to bash the game because of it, but I really enjoyed it. It shows how Square could pull a twist on their own formula.

FF9 I've not heared about as much, but it's more like a throwback to the older games (FF1, 4, 6) except turned into 3D! From what I hear it's very underrated so I'd recommend to check it out.

Crash Bash. Yeah, call it a Mario Party clone or whateveer you want, that is not the case. This is a party stylised Crash game in which you have to play a series of levels, which are minigames, to move onto a boss and go to the next world. Best thing is, it has a story mode which you can play co-operatively. And the different games are varied and repeats of the games have some twists on the formula. Bare in mind though, AI is AI and sometimes you will cry. Especially on the bonus challenges.
Crash Bash

Tomb Raider 1-5. (Just so you know, they're all pretty similar and I hear that 2 was the best.) Tomb Raider is a 3D platform adventure series about Lara Croft, who goes to different places to find treasure. I won't go over the story as it's not the main focus, but the game is challenging experience, filled with secrets, puzzles, platforming and fun. There is also shooting, but it's no CoD. But it's no TR 2013 either.
Tomb Raider 1

A game that rarely get's mentioned: Pac Man world. It's another 3D platformer, with no free-roaming camera. You are in role of Pac-Man, who, on his 20th birthday, has to travel through several worlds, challenge bosses and ultimately, rescue his family. The game has varied bosses, very cool worlds and is challenging... Or you can play the classic more which is just Pac-Man.
Pac-Man World

I don't have itme to list all the games but other honorable mentions are: Klonoa (a 2.5D platformer, but it's very rare and expensive), Suikoden games (JRPG series, another rare gem), Jackie Chan Stuntmaster (a 3D beat them up with elements of platforming and secrets), MediEvil (a 3D adventure series, kind of like zelda with exploration of levels and puzzles, a solid recommend, check it out), Parasite Eve (underrated Square RPG, with elements of action, it is very different from Final Fantasy games as it takes place in real world and has more dark tones, a solid recommend), Disney's Tarzan (Think of it as DKC of Sony, it is a 2.5D platformer with tons of secrets, the game's decently chalenging) and ]Crash Team Racing (a mix of Mario Kart ghameplay, with Diddy Kong Racing styled missions, with Crash characters and worlds). I'm probably forgetting about some games, but these are just a few. I'd especially recommend Final Fantasy 7/8/9, MediEvil, Parasite Eve, Pac Man World, Crash Bandicoot 1/2/3, Crash Bash. Hope that helped you ;)

My favorite is Lunar: Silver Star Story COMPLETE. It's a jrpg with anime cutscenes, so it's probably a bit biased. The story may seem cliche, but it's good nonetheless, and the characters and art are awesome. It has a unique battle system as well, and the game's not hard if you know what you're doing. There's a slight difficulty spike around the middle-end though.

I also have Eternal Eyes, another rpg, more similar to FE and Disgaia in terms of battle mechanics. I haven't played it in quite awhile though.

And have fun with Chrono Cross; that game was ♥♥♥♥ amazing.

I owned a Playstation years and years ago but I didn't have many games to I traded it in for cash and I'm kicking myself for that. The few games I had were Crash Bandicoot Warped, some snowboarding game, and I had Final Fantasy 8 at one point, though I must've lost it or something because after that I lost interest in the system.

I'll get Final Fantasy 7 on Steam, so no worries there.

When I was at the store yesterday, the only few games that looked interesting were Mega Man X6, SotN, Final Fantasy 9 and Chrono Cross. I was really hoping they'd have a copy of FF8, but nope.

I haven't really seen much of the newer MMX games, so 6 was meh. From what little footage I've seen, I feel like they've strayed away from the classic formula of Mega Man.

SotN was wayyy too expensive (It was over 30 bucks, which was all I had), so that was out.

So that left Final Fantasy 9 and Chrono Cross. The lady that runs the store even mentioned that they got Chrono Cross in recently, and considering how much I love the prequel, I figured that would be the best choice. I'm only about an hour or so into the game and already I'm really enjoying it. The battle system was confusing at first (I still don't think I completely understand it, mostly the parts about the Elements), but I think I've pretty much got it. And the story, holy crap I'm confused already. Random out of place event at the beginning, a normal village life, then a time paradox... I am enjoying it though, it's pretty fun. And the music, omg don't even get me started. It's amazing, so many throwbacks to Trigger (just listen to that battle victory theme! :music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAndtPjTHfg) and so much good new music.

Spyro sounds okay, I have Enter the Dragonfly for Gamecube. I haven't played it in a long time, but from what I can remember, it's alright. Maybe I should give it another chance...
