About Playstation Consles and Emulation

Postby blue » August 9th, 2013, 5:37 am

So as the new PS4 comes outs, and there are barely any PS2s in the world, does anyone know if you can play PS2 games on it or any alternatives?

The game is Need for Speed Underground 2.

Played when I was young (VERY). anyone know?

No. Not through disc, anyway. With Gaikai, however, many older games should eventually become available digitally.

Though emulating PS2 will have some issues, not to mention slowdowns which I sometimes have, and since the PS2 emulation isn't that well developed (1 emulator with pretty much 1 set of plugins) I doubt that you could run the games at the same rate as on an actual PS2

Its okay guys! I totally forgotten you could play NFSU2 on the PC!

I played this a long time ago on the PS2. Now that PS2 is gone, and NFSU2 is missing, I have to play the PC demo!

Nostalgia :) Remember the moment when the disc was scratched and never finished the game. :(

Don't know how i forgot you could play on PC...

While on topic of PS2... is it region-locked? Are the games region-locked? I'd like to play a certain game, but it wasn't released in Europe ever so...

PS emulators run games jst like PJ64 and VBA and ZSnes emulate other console games. You will run into issues like the framerate dropping to 1/10 whats normal and itll be extremely slow...like....♥♥♥♥. Thirty seconds for main menu option animations and four times that for gaming itself. The 3D graphics render different from normal PC renders and the PS2 generates the whole game more or less, something a PC tries not to. So games like NFS and Midnight Club and even Kingdom Hearts are a ♥♥♥♥♥ to run.

Metropolismnia was pretty smooth minus lag spikes though. This is because it is all basic graphics and models.

Youd need a gaming PC with an assload of upgrades and mods to run it like a PS2, or you can buy a new PS2 and use that.

Thankfully my PS1 still runs fine so all I have to do is keep it cool and it runs nice. PS2 bit the dust after the power switch ♥♥♥♥ up.

As forregion locks...I believe so in some games. But I think there is a dev console that can play anything. It was originall Japanese only but it can be imported. Just read up on PS2 models on Wikipedia for info.

There were more than 150 million PS2 units sold, so I'm sure if you looked around you could find a second hand one. PS3 has PSN which may have the game you're looking for, and I would think that PS4 would also have/is going to have this at some point.

I would not go with emulation.

I agree with Buff, I wouldn't recommend emulation. As Stoneheart said, the emulation is generally very slow; you'd need a godly computer to run it at a good steady framerate, and even then it might not run perfect since they haven't perfected it. Not to mention the fact that emulation is illegal, unless you dump the ISO yourself with your own discs.

From personal experience, some games run better on emulators than others. Final Fantasy 8 runs pretty well most of the time. Some slowdown and (mostly) minor graphical glitches, but otherwise it runs pretty well. I resorted to emulation because I remember playing the game when I was young and I don't remember what happened to my discs. I must've lost them or something; after that I lost pretty much all interest in my PS1 and sold it. Of course now, I found one for cheap and also found Chrono Cross, which ignited my passion for gaming.

If you insist on emulation, I would NOT recommend Metal Gear Solid. It is EXTREMELY finicky, and unless you have the right plugins configured to the right settings, the sound and video skips horribly during cutscenes and makes them pretty much unwatchable. I'm hoping to find a copy of that game and get it so I can actually play it.
