First of all, don't focus on trading at the moment. Try out all the items, and once you've decided which ones you'll play with, you can start crafting them into scrap. Scrap can be made on the 'Crafting' part of your inventory. You must use 2 weapons of the same class to get metal, but there are site (like scrap.tf) that let you trade 2 weapons of any class in exchange for 1 scrap- this is called scrapbanking.
You can trade with anyone on the server at the time or with anyone on your friends list.
On a tradesheet, Scrap metal is worth '.11', Reclaimed Metal is worth '.33' and Refined Metal is worth '1'. Thus, if someone is selling an item for 2.77 it means he's selling it for 2 refined, 2 reclaimed and 1 scrap (2+.66+.11)
Metal isn't the only currency in TF2. There's also keys (worth around 6 ref as the time of posting this i believe, they can also be used to open crates) and Earbuds (worth around twenty-something keys, worth a lot because they were only available during a limited Mac OSX promo long time ago).
Crates are not useless- you can unbox 'Strange' items from them (which count kills), Strange Parts (applied to a strange weapons, counts specific things like Buildings Destroyed, Engineers Killed, etc), Hats and most importantly, Unusual Hats (hats with a special effect like flames or a circling TF2 logo) which are worth a crapton. However, there's only a 1% chance to unbox an unusual, hats aren't really that expensive and Strange weapons are usually worth way less than a key (with some exceptions). So, unless you want to gamble and hope you get an unusual, you'd rather keep keys to yourself.
tl;dr. get used to the game before trading; you can trade with your friends too; keys and earbuds are also a currency; crates are not useless, but you're pretty much gambling when opening one.
