Various Retro Video Game Glitches

Thumbs up x1

Hey, I am here to talk about various glitches and myths that go to retro video games like Galaga or Pac-Man. I'll start with Map 256 on Pac-Man. There are only 255 "normal" levels within Pac-Man. Once it gets to Level 256, it draws 256 fruit. That's obviously a problem, so the right side of the screen (which is where the fruit is aligned) turns into a complete mess.
Take a look:
Image
Many people call it a kill screen. Why? The game checks for 244 Pac-Dots eaten by Pac-Man for the level to end. The right half of the screen contains only 9 dots. 122 on the left half plus the mere 9 on the right half is 131, not nearly enough to progress. (The nine dots can be consumed again on each life, but you can't get enough lives to make it to 244.)" Mrs. Pac-Man also has this bug, but it only has the screen go blank with nothing except Ms. Pac-Man and the ghosts.
Anyways, on to Galaga.
Image
It has a Map 256 glitch too, but opon reaching that level, it adds an extra stage named stage 0. In a few seconds the game will crash and you have to reset it. Depending on the difficulty setting of the machine, this can cause the game to stall, requiring that the machine be reset or power-cycled in order to start a new game. Galaga can also have an exploitable bug that can cause the attackers to stop firing bullets at the player, due to a coding error. How to do this? If you do not kill two specific enemies and wait for 5 minutes, the ships will stop attacking you. Here's another: In the very beginning, you can shoot 2 ships at a time, and then with out killing anymore, let them kill you. You will get 200% out of 100% for firing 1 shot hitting 2 ships. Also occasionally, a ship may turn into something the shape of a barcode, possibly, but this has to do with a bug in the series. Another is where when the Yellow Minion is turning into a bonus ship, as its wings turn red, if you die the next time you come back up the wings will stay red until you kill the ship. (It works better in 2 player mode, because it's amusing to see it after someone else plays for a while.)
Hey, there's also an Easter Egg in Galaga. When the red ships are destroyed, they make a "wakka" noise. This is possibly a reference to Pac-Man. Also, in Galaga Remix, you are able to see "Star Bits" from the Nintendo game Super Mario Galaxy. That's all for now, I'll let you guys know if I find anything else! :awe:

Everything you could ever possibly want to know about Galaga/Pac-Man is right here

also the game doesn't create a new stage called Stage 0, it's just an error

It's what http://www.galaga.wikia.com said. (Quote, Copied and pasted of course: "There are a total of 255 stages, if you finish the last stage, it adds an extra stage naming it stage 0. In a few seconds the game will crash and you have to reset it.") Honestly Galaga is my fav. retro game of all time. My current best is stage 12.

Then maybe you should type up something of your own rather than quoting from a wiki (which, needless to say, isn't always right)

I have seen a glitch in the 3DS Virtual Console version where I can't control my ship sometimes. And is your captured ship suppost to attack you when you destroy the alien before it goes after you? I did tone back on the copy and pasting, if you didn't notice.
EDIT: Lucky for you Zunar, this is about Pokemon Blue! Like I said with the Map 256 Glitch in Pac-Man, there is one in Pokemon Blue! Say you have 6 Pokemon. Actually, you have zero Pokemon. There's a value in RAM which stores how many Pokemon you have in your party for things like Pokemon Centers; when adding Pokemon to the machine it executes a "subtract one, compare with 0, if not equal do it again" loop. When that value is zero the first subtraction circles over to 255, so it ends up drawing 256 Pokeballs (most of which end up being glitchy crap at the top of the screen due to overrunning the end of an array). Since you now have 256 pokemon (side effect of gameshark on a PC emulator or a SuperGlitch, such as TM TRAINER), normaly when you glitch it up so bad with gameshark if you look at the pokemon screen your game goes on it's knees, to die soon after. There is an alternative to this though, Bill's PC. Bill's PC works differently, so you can actually fiddle with arbitrary bits of system memory.

MK, this guy doesn't know everything about how you want posts to be made. Chill out and let him speak.

Just saying how it's nice to write something of your own instead of quoting verbatim from a potentially unreliable source

backing away now
