8-bit Armies
So, good news! Turns out that Petroglyph, the studios that worked on the C&C franchise with Westwood before EA brought them out, has been making a comeback and developed a game called 8-bit Armies, which retains a lot of old C&C elements with some fresh gameplay and exciting skirmishes!
Probably the best part about 8-bit armies is the units are EXTREMELY well balanced. Like, even superweapons need to be strategically used and positioned to be effective! It's incredible what they have done with the game so far, and they're only going to keep making very positive updates to add more creativity, factions, and bug fixes as time goes on. I HIGHLY recommend this game even if you're not a big RTS fan, for due to its simple mechanics and very good tutorials/game manuals, you can get into the game regardless of how much RTS experience you have.
Oh, and did I ever mention that Frank Klepacki also worked on the soundtrack, and how AMAZING IT IS?!?
no seriously though if you have a steam go check it out and consider buying it
and if you don't have a steam go get one :U
edit: oh, and if you're a bit worried with how generic some of the units in the Renegades faction seems, note that the renegades are the first faction. As they start making more factions, we're very likely to see much more diversity and creativity with the units.
