Would you develop a game based on your life?

Postby CedarBranch » October 31st, 2016, 8:30 am

(Subtitle leaves an unnoticeable hint.)
Personally, I've started considering it. I'm not giving any details, though. Repressive state of mind, y'know.

Maybe this Wednesday, it'll finally be spoken... But that depends on how my appointment goes.

Edit: Adding a log to this post for any notable updates on my situation.

I haven't gotten over my neurosis at all yet, but yesterday's first official session was still fine. Was eventually able to explain my case, from the traumatic experience up to the present.

Edit: Should have added that I'm nowhere near ready to make a video game. However, I do have a concept in my head.
By the way, the recurring theme I intend is: negativity is reality. :larrow: Hardly a spoiler.

I've thought of many ideas for games based on the happenings of the forums...

Frankly I think my life is pretty boring compared to most other people's, so I wouldn't, but if you think your experiences have potential, then maybe you should try it. But I'd probably start smaller with storywriting and stuff, unless you already have the design, programming, and art skills (or a team to supply some of those skills for you) to help you pull off something like a game.

I guess I don't really have much experience, but the "funnel" of progression I would imagine is something like this:
Living life, maybe diary/journal-keeping for experience logging and idea tracking --> more creative expression: that is, writing about it through things like stories, poetry, even books (you probably don't necessarily need to share with anyone if you don't want to, but it's easier than jumping right away to trying to make a game), or expression in other ways like through visual art (you do a pretty good job of that already) or music or something --> working on developing a bigger, more technical project: an animation, game, movie, etc. based on those experiences, stories, emotions, and whatnot.

Surely it's not like I could pull off such a feat so soon! It would most likely be a long-term goal; I'm only considering it at this point.

The hardest part for me personally would probably be budgeting. At all.

EDIT: I deny it sometimes, but I've been told how I'm fluent with my (story) writing, so that shouldn't be too big a concern. I've got a long, long way to go when it comes to programming or coding. I sort of understand a little bit - not nearly enough, though. My expression could use a little work, too.

EDIT2: Oh, right. I'm not too fond of journal-keeping, but only if it were to become a household thing. I find it easier if used during sessions.

EDIT3: This post needed minor rewording...

Lul, don't worry, I'm definitely not saying you have to do these things--I'm by no means any sort of expert on this kind of thing. Whatever works for you is probably what's best, if it helps you. I think it's pretty great (and really fulfilling) to just have a long-term personal creative project like this (and like how one of my teachers is writing a novel on the side of teaching + getting another degree, and some of my friends write lots of short stories and poetry for fun, or they take up learning a programming language with the end goal of a game in mind, and I like doing conlanging and worldbuilding projects sometimes), no matter how you go about doing it or how long it takes.

I've thought about it. A psychological RPG where you can never win or lose, only learn yourself as the game learns you.
