Fate... Is it our choice?

Postby Chaukai » February 27th, 2010, 7:41 pm

So... I have an English essay due, and I just am thinking about the prompt and I want to ask a few questions.

Now, I will not say which side I am on, but I do want to see what other people think.

Do you believe that certain things happen for a reason? That people are destined to become a certain someone? If you see in a lot of movies and games, they will talk about how it is their "destiny" and whatnot. Is it? Could it have been some other Kokiri kid who saved Hyrule? Could Neville had been the boy who lived and not Harry Potter? Could Eragon had missed the Egg and no story would be told?

Do you think that we are destined to do things, or we are given the power to choose our own life?

These are all made up stories, so the fact is, no. Also, Link isn't Kokiri, he's Hylian.

But fate... well, we choose are own destiny. We choose our own actions and stuff, but does not mean we don't have a bigger purpose, if we have one at all..

It only depends on the type of fate. Do we have control over the simple things such as crime and roadrage; the small things we didn't have control over? They control our fate? What about 9-11? The hundreds of people who died that day; did they have control? No.

I believe people can control their own fate. I believe we have control of our actions, and sometimes we can avoid things like death if we're smart enough. Be healthy so you don't develop cancer, look both ways before crossing the street, etc...

When we die, we die. We don't have control over when it happens, but only how it happens.

So who chooses the death of the people from 9-11 then, hmm? The terrorists? I see what you mean by the fact that we can't control that, but are you saying that that means those who can kill us have the power to choose our fate?

I don't know at the moment. o.o I don't really think that "coincidence" and "fate" are really synonymous, but I'm just trying to play Devil's Advocate. x.x

We absolutely control our own destiny. We choose whether or not to get drunk (once of legal age, of course ;) ) and then go driving. We choose whether or not to ask the girl out who may change our lives forever (or not). Those are just two common examples, and that list could go on and on and on.

Thank you Steve Perry. So yeah. Any other happenings that can not simply be explained by choices is coincidence. It was coincidence that those who were in the World Trade Center on 9/11 were in that building the same day terrorists chose to destroy it.

I agree with mic to a certain point. You can choose HALF your fate. Half of the things in your life you control (actions, etc.) and the other half other people control (their actions on you). So its half and half i guess.

You know, I would so totally quote Blazblue, what with the "Wheel of Fate" and everything, but if the "Wheel of Fate" existed, House of the Dead 3 would be based on true events, even if it hasn't happened, nor will it ever happen.

Half and Half? This is not a subway sandwich you dolt!
Naaaaaawww, see, it's like this.

Imagine you are a miner (lolminor), and you are searching for gold. You can choose to dig to as hard as you want, and as fast as you want, and you might actually find some gold, but if a sudden landslide happens you die, yet, you didn't choose that sort of thing to happen.

"We can choose a path we wish to take, but the world around us decides whether or not to bend that path."- ShouldBeAFamousQuote.

Not even Sherlock Holmes, what with all his mighty deducing skills, can control fate . .__.

THE CREED: Nothing is True. Everything is Permitted.
"...That's rather cynical."

"It would be if it were doctrine, but it is merely an observation of the nature of reality.
To say that Nothing is True is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shephards of our own civilization.
To say that Everything is Permitted is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with the consequences, whether glorious...or tragic."
-Ezio Auditore da Firenze explaining the Creed, 1514, Masayaf.
