Does money serve us or do we serve money?

Postby lordpat » June 6th, 2013, 4:46 pm

Money does not buy happiness, but it does make it easier. Not all rich people are happy, but it is true that they have conforts that poor people certianly cannot have. Not all poor people are miserable, but they do have specific problems of that kind that can make their lives much harder to take on.

The question is: do we depend from money or money depends on us? Now, the answer is seemingly obvious: no humans, no money. It is evident that money needs humans to survive, but try to think it from a more individualistic stand point. How much does money affect your current life? You need money to eat, to shower...it is obviously very important. Is it true that maybe money it is too important for us? is it true that money is the root of all evil? is it true that our society is turning overly materialistic, where someone that is useful to society if they buy stuff? is it true that money is overrated, that it does not show much about a person? At which point money becomes more important than people?

What do you think?

EDIT: Wow, crappy grammar. Sorry.

When it comes to me, I just need money to afford taxis and buses to go to and from college, lunch, and random emergencies. Besides that, I don't really need any money...

Of course money depends on us, we're the ones who give it value... It isn't the root of all evil, there's just evil people with money. Money is something that was invented to replace trading, pretty much, so that instead of saying that you can have this meat if you give me wood :awe: you can have this meat by giving me a dollar instead. It's kind of a universal trading material (except for different countries who have different currencies... but the US dollar is starting to become kinda universal these days... confound those northamericans... :P ) So yeah, maybe we could use other system, but for now it's all we have... if you want to know more about money and the way it works you could look it up in Wikipedia or something.

As for materialism... there are people who are actually materialistic, but it's not all people. Not everyone goes on shopping sprees and whatnot. The people you see in MTV and stuff? Those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ have money, and probably can afford it, but we normal people can't. xD So materialism can come with being rich, probably, but it isn't necessary. And it's probably work that's better to society than money. We need people who work doing... stuff. Like harvesting wheat, building... buildings, creating technology, cutting your hair, that kind of stuff.

Depends on who you are. Most wealthy people only live for their money and their luxury, and a lot of poorer people are forced to live based on how much money they have and when they can get more. The middle class is a bit more neutral.

I don't know if that's serious or not. xD

Also, why does this forum count the word b-a-s-t-a-r-d as a swear word? :P

To answer the question in the title - at the risk of being viewed as a devil's advocate - which of the options is more..natural? Consider what money was created for, that is, the replacement - or rather, an enhancement, of trading. Trading, as in the exchange of goods between people, is a staple of human society. Being a communal society, exchanging resources, as opposed to keeping them all for oneself, is the foundation of social interaction.

Therefore, money, according to its position as the universal method of trading, is the foundation of human society.

Given that esteemed position, the new question becomes whether or not humans serve their society.

Let us ponder that. Think of all ways humans conform to the subjective ideals of their society.
For some basics, consider things such as:
  • Wearing clothes
  • Speaking a common language
  • Living according to group loyalty, such as nationalism
  • Performing labor for and within their group
  • E.t.c.
And of course, the near infinite amount of varying cultural norms which modify the above examples.

So, each individual's existence is, for the most part, defined by their interactions with those around them - and, therefore, by their society.
If humans are defined by their society, which in turn exists on a foundation of resource exchange (i.e. money), is it not an intuitive logical extension for humans to "serve" money?

Whether or not that is desirable is a different topic altogather.
