Competent teachers for the regular classes too, longer classes but spread out. Less emphasis on notes and bookwork, more emphasis on lectures (in which the students are allowed to interrupt if they are confused), groupwork, and presentations/projects.

Just gonna point this out and add my little say.

I have a Maths teacher who can't write the number 8 at all.
She also ignores students who desperately need help to answer pointless emails.

It all depends on the school and teachers you have. I'm lucky to have teachers who genuinely care or at least do a pretty good job of faking it. If the students aren't willing to learn, then what is the point of actually hiring teachers? The lack of motivation is key here, and I don't blame teachers sometimes for just giving up, but packets aren't the way to go.

To skip right straight to what I think is related: http://youtu.be/k9ic6ztQYjg?t=3m7s

ssssh shut up I know this is hardly related to the discussion at hand

By the way, one of the kids in that video above is sleeping, another two are on their phones, and none of them actually seem to have school materials. This Jeff Bliss guy seems to know what he wants, but no one else seems to want it.

"Unfortunately Wiggins hinted at something of a good point. Not everyone can teach effectively. I'm sure you know (as do I) a teacher who does the profession a disservice. Sadly, some people can teach for just 2 years, in some states, and get tenure, making it very hard to remove them.

Not only do we need to pay teachers way more money and respect, but we also need to expect more from applicants. Then maybe we can have a culture in which teaching is a highly coveted and respected position."

THE CREED: Nothing is True. Everything is Permitted.
"...That's rather cynical."

"It would be if it were doctrine, but it is merely an observation of the nature of reality.
To say that Nothing is True is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shephards of our own civilization.
To say that Everything is Permitted is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with the consequences, whether glorious...or tragic."
-Ezio Auditore da Firenze explaining the Creed, 1514, Masayaf.
