Well....... Ultimately, we are the cause, and somehow the best hope, for the problems the whole world is suffering. The United States is the most powerful country in the world, and naturally, the rest of the world is copying our patterns searching for success. The problem is that the U.S. culture is fatally flawed, and is either going to completely collapse, or completely change. There is still time to save the world as it is, but it will take uncommon leadership, and uncommon support for abandoning the things that are broken, and it is mostly ALL broken. Is this an elitist conversation? No. At its core, it is not about domination or superiority. It is about taking an objective look at the world as it is now, and wondering what to do next. Yes, there is an element of superiority in saying the U.S. is the most powerful, or a leader, or whatever, but if it is not being used to oppress someone else with actions or words indicating that they are less, then it can be considered either pure harmless pride or possibly objective fact, and we can move beyond it to the real problems at hand.
Yes, the U.S. is in decline, and moreover, the U.S. way of life that has been copied all over the world, to varying degrees, is declining also. Other countries have already tried it our way, and realized some of the flaws, and are trying to find something better. Americans have much to learn from this process as it has progressed in the wider world. The larger problem is the damage that has already been done. The flaws in American culture run incredibly deep, and mostly revolve around the overall encouragement of addictive personalities and greed. The obliviousness and avarice that the current American ideal fosters is destructive to individuals and communities alike. It is such a problem, that until it is solved, things will continue to get worse, perhaps fatally so, for all of us.
