"The SOPA (Stop Online Privacy Act) bill has resurfaced and is once again trying to be passed.

The link attached will take you to a petition. Unless this petition reaches 100,000 signatures by next week, this will happen:


All websites containing media that refers to or is owned by a company that hasn’t given its permission for the media to be displayed can and will be shut down. This means sites such as Tumblr, Wattpad, Pinterist, fanfiction.com.
People who post such media can and will be fined, with a maximum sentence of five years in prison. This includes, but is not limited to, people who own/post the following: fanfiction, fan art, roleplay blogs, fan blogs/accounts and movie streaming sites.
"The legislation would allow copyright holders and the Justice Department to seek court orders against websites associated with copyright infringement. SOPA, the House version, applies to both domestic and foreign websites, while PIPA targets foreign websites. If that court order is granted, the entire website would be taken down. Internet users who typed in the site’s URL address would receive an error message, and for all appearances, the site would never have existed. Importantly, the court does not need to hear a defense from the actual website before issuing its ruling. The entire website can be condemned without a trial or even a traditional court hearing."

This is not a joke.
This is real.

We need 100,000 signatures by next week. Make one of them yours, or all these things that make you happy will disappear."

I'll sign, as long as I don't have to go to anything like a court or something.
Also, in my opinion, the current president is making the worst decisions since... Since.... I can't think of anything...

"Since no one in this post, or the petition decided to actually explain this one does, I’ll give you the cliffnotes.

Basically, what this allows companies to do is remove websites that have any sort of content on their site without their permission lock, stock, and barrel, and gives them them the right to then sue any and all users of said infringing site with a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

What that means is that sites like Deviantart, Tumblr, Fanfiction.net, any site at all, can now be suspended and unable to be accessed without trial.

It also means that if you post a gif of a movie that you don’t own to Tumblr, you can now be fined or face up to five years in prison.

That also goes for fanfiction you might have posted, an rp blog you might have, a sound clip on a youtube video…

If you name it, simply having those things on a websites will have them shut down and removed from the DNS listing BEFORE they have a trial or are notified as to WHY they are being shut down.

Then, while they are shut down, you can be sued for having posted things on that website that you do not technically own.

So if you actually, you know, give a ♥♥♥♥ about your internet, your gifs, your fanfiction, your rp blogs, or any content that you don’t own.

THEN SIGN THIS.

I've signed it, and I give a ♥♥♥♥ about the internet, but if this is so important and shocking, why isn't it on the news? And why is it when I type SOPA into Google it's when everyone was panicking back in 2012, and nothing from 2013 or 14?

Just saying. I still find it hard to believe that it's really coming back big time. Sure there are always going to be people trying to slip it back, but that doesn't mean it's going to definitely happen. It's stupid, so many people have done fan made stuff over the years that they won't even be able to track down the how many million people they decided to fine for it. Besides, for my own sanity and anxiety, I've tossed this out of my head for now. If I spend this amount of time worrying about it as some do, god, I'd just explode from panic.
