Why we don't allow the public to dole out the punishment

Postby MessengerOfDreams » April 14th, 2014, 2:17 pm

So some dumb teen sent out a tweet joking about a bomb on a plane or something, which is really ♥♥♥♥ up. Let's see how the lovely commenters of the Oregonian would handle this situation.

Actually let's rank it from least extreme to most extreme.

Mildly reasonable although still reeking of America jingoism
"Grounded from the internet until she's learned her lesson, and write a report on how ♥♥♥♥ up it is to cry wolf like that." (10 likes)
"5 years volunteering at the VA Hospital." (57 likes)
"No internet until 18, 2000 hours community service." (11 likes)

Pretty out there.
"Banned for life from flying, no leaving the country." (9 likes)
"Permabanned from the internet." (8 likes)
"40,000 hours of community servic (or, 4.5 years of 24-hour days. Cut out sleep and meals and that's 10 years minimum if she does literally nothing else.)" (14 likes)
"Grounded for 3 years: no leaving the house, no technology, no nothin." (45 likes)
"Put the whole family under house arrest and deprive them of any technology for five years." (Let's hope they don't run business online.) (5 likes)
"Grounded until she is 18, probation, community service until she is 18 at a Vet Hospital and also a grief center for those who have lost loved ones to terrorist attacks, Army boot camp, all electronics removed and banned, 6 months in jail, counseling until she is 18, homeschooled, and required to wear an ankle monitor." (9 likes)

You really want this teenage scum to all die don't you
"Lifetime in prison for terrorism." (15 likes)
"Ship her to Afghanistan." (9 likes)
"Ship her naked to the Taliban." (8 likes)
"Put all teenagers into work camps and take all of their technology away." (11 likes)

Because, after all, this is America. Suck our red, white, and blue cock.

----------

No doubt what this broad did was stupid and ignorant, but this is some pretty alarming reaction. People literally want this woman to suffer for years and/or die for daring to disrespect Murrca. That's all it is.

Now let's say this is you. We're all those accursed evil teenage scum. How would you handle this spoiled brat casually tweeting that she was going to bomb a plane?

Not sure what jingoism is but I've heard the word jingo before.
I guess I'm a jingo though because I think the first one is pretty goddamn reasonable, albeit not nearly as big of a punishment. Unless I'm misunderstanding or something, the tweet probably ended up having the plane having to go back to the airport. This could end up in her family being sued and even worse.

Yeah the first one is the only reasonable one.

(Jingoism is extreme, propaganda-level pride, I think)

Don't make her write an essay
make her write TWO essays.
One analyzing how that would be funny to anyone in the first place and one explaining why she is using twitter at all
with nothing but paper and two pencils.

Single Spaced, must be two full pages each.
make her feel the punishment

Also irrelevant but I think the first time we ever let the public vote on punishments we killed Socrates because he was hip

Parents need to monitor for the time being, restrict how long she's on, parents more or less gave her a bit too much freedom on their end.

She's Dutch, though, not American, so whatever the Dutch does, that's up to them. Don't get your panties in a knot, 'Murica, she's not ours...

I really wasn't surprised what the reactions would be though. This is like that time a 14 year old from Texas murdered her two brothers, her mother, and wounded her father, and is in the state pen for life. There are people wanting her dead, electrocuted, and a watermelon shoved up her ♥♥♥ with razors. And Bernie Tiede, another murderer, they want shot and stuffed in a freezer to feel how the victim, Ms. Nugent, felt...but won't he be...you know...dead?

If she was my child though, I'd let her serve her time according to what the feds or state decide. Then make her work to pay off the costs of the sentence, meaning I'd make her get a job and work for the money, and every dollar goes straight to the bail or fine. She's lose access to a phone, and I'd limit her data on it to enough where it can be for emergencies. I'd also have her give me her social media account credentials, and ground her from them, letting her on as an incentive to not ♥♥♥♥ up again. And to top it off, a 10-page essay, written, apologizing, without repeating the same ♥♥♥♥ over and over. In cursive, proper English. Explaining why it is stupid to make a bomb threat to a nation previously crippled by terrorism, citing sources from legal documents and texts of native country and country she offended, and have her write about her sentence, how it affected her, how it hindered her, and how she learned from it. Also have her be a part of support groups for families affected by bombings and terroristic attacks, and have her listen and help those still mourning, so she understands how bad she ♥♥♥♥ up, and how it's nothing to joke about.

Seems reasonable in my head...I dunno.

"No internet until 18, 2000 hours community service." (11 likes)

That one I agree with. ^
It's reasonable and it's harsh but it's not saying ALL TEENAGERS, EVEN INNOCENT ONES, MUST BE JAILED AND RAPED.

Don't get me wrong, this girl obviously is scum if she's joking about a bomb on a plane. But come on, give her a punishment that will actually prove useful to her, and will actually help her turn her sad pathetic life around. Cut off from internet until she's 18 and doing 2000 hours community service will give her a taster of what it's like to do something good for other people and what it's like to live somewhere that isn't behind a computer screen.

And what will jailing her for terrorism or sending her naked to the Taliban actually achieve? America having a lower reputation than most other countries in the world? Proving that talking about a bomb on a plane in any way is as horrific as the 9/11 itself? It's just ridiculous, and I thought the UK was bad right now.

(I know I'm not American, but I have an opinion. :P )

And so the world turned a lil bit darker again. Agreeing with punishment. But I do not think, that any punishment will better her behaviour. Latter ones may destroy a person, rather than making it better, what's not good either. People need to find out by theirself that they've been doing something wrong, or if people are even pointing it out, they frikkin need to understand if it's reasonable.

I could act like a complete idiot, get punished for it and do not care at all. Sooner or later I'd grow back to my old behaviour. As long as people cannot see what they're doing wrong and hell it's definitely the majority of human kind who fails at that, we will continue to see such things happening. Probably forever and ever. I'm for my part thinking that the only reasonable 'punishment' would be the act of exiling any of them. May it be from internet (saaadly impossible yet) or any other form of communication up to the classic personal face to face one.

We as humans need communication pretty urgently in one way or another. The majority of people will only get hurt if you're taking that in one way or another. It'd of course always be a better solution if people would actually try to help the world instead of making it worse with their pure parasitic existence.

But who am I to say anything of that, as it's definitely not my business and simply wasted time in the end. I suppose, I will silently keep hating anyone 'bad' on this world. Even if none of them would care, heh

i disagree with every last one of those, holy ♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥
2000 ♥♥♥♥ hours? that's 88days, 8hrs of nonstop work
for something someone typed on the internet, that is COMPLETE ♥♥♥♥
i don't give a ♥♥♥♥ what it is, but to make someone do THAT amount of work because of some ♥♥♥♥ typed up words is just idiotic

sure, ban the person from twitter or whatever the ♥♥♥♥ it was on! that's actually reasonable!

so what would i do? have exactly what i just said done, and probably take away their devices for a month or something. because to me that's reasonable for some internet words
don't get me wrong, those words are veeeery bad. not denying that. if someone was walking around saying that ♥♥♥♥, then i can find some of those punishments reasonable. but it's the ♥♥♥♥ internet. this is the type of thing one should expect from the internet, because some people are ♥♥♥♥♥.

that is all.
