Psychatrist calls transgenderism a mental disorder

Postby JSlayerXero » June 10th, 2015, 1:12 pm

While surfing around for news I came across this article which talks about a form Psychiatrist in Chief, Dr. Paul R. McHugh, who thinks being a transgender is a mental disorder. Thought it would be interesting to see what you guys think.

To me, it sort of is and sort of isn't. It's like low-to-moderate autism, aspergers, and MPD. We don't think of them as disorders, we think of them as normal, and we go as far as to treat the individual as if they are normal.

The "transgenders have mental disorders" thing goes back to a topic of psychology known as gender dysphoria, and while, yes, it may be linked to several mental imbalances(schizophrenia, multiple personality disorder, bipolar disorder, autism, etc.), there is really nothing wrong with it. Hell, if you want to bring up religion, even God is a transgender, he lacks gender and sex altogether.

Personally, I identify as an agendered asexual, because some days I'm overly feminine, other days I'm masculine, and sometimes I'm in the middle. And if there is a chemical imbalance in my neurotransmitters or neurons, I wouldn't be shocked, nor would I be bothered. It's like homosexuality...it's not hurting anyone, so why label it as a disorder just because it clashes against the norm of society?

There's even someone in our little forum cliche who is transgender, yet they are as neurotypical as can be if seen from a distance.

So whether it is or isn't it doesn't matter a given ♥♥♥♥, because unless it breaks our species and causes us to rebreed, no one is affected negatively.

Playing devil's advocate, but in the main idea, he is right. Transgenderism isn't really something normal as your mind doesn't really accept your body ("I don't like being a man, I feel more feminine"). Just because this doesn't necessary influence others, nor it's one of the disorders that can cause you psychicall pain, it doesn't mean it's a "normal" thing. Don't jump to the conclusion that I hate trans people, but up to a certain point, it actually was biologically impossible to change genders. Observing any other animal besides the human, you're pourpose is to survive & reproduce, regardless of gender, regardless of anomalies. If you fail to do any of that, then you weren't good enough for the world (going to eugenics here).

Today, the human race doesn't necessary have to reproduce that much anymore, as we already are too many (>7 milliards) so we can actually focus on the smaller parts that animals can't, for instance having a nice and healthy society, diversity and so on. Accepting transgenderism is a part of this, it wouldn't actually influence our pourpose as species, but make certain individuals feel better or live longer (some actually suffer if they cannot have the gender you identify with).

In conclusion, because we accept it and it's not much harm at all, we see transgenderism as a normal thing, it's actually not because one's mind cannot trully accept the body, and by logic (or at least my logic, but just proove it wrong), being normal (mentally) is your mind trully accepting the body and it's functions as they are.

*jumps into thread without reading the article*

There's nothing wrong with homosexuality, nor being transgender, nor anything like that. But you can't say it's the norm when the grand majority of people is straight. That's what the norm is. And being gay or transgender can be considered a mental disorder, just like Autism and other stuff. That doesn't mean it's bad. They're just different people, and just like everyone else they deserve respect.

Also God is beyond our concepts of gender entirely, I think. But that doesn't make Him transgender. :P

Calling it a MENTAL DISORDER is really the wrong term to use.
It does affect the way a person thinks, feels and identifies themselves as, but saying that it's actually an 'illness' is like saying that homosexuality is an 'illness' too.
(unfortunately, a lot of people still believe that -.-)

It's probably because in some cases it has been called 'gender identity disorder', however that still doesn't mean that it is one.

I lol'd a bit at Arturia's post

If you want to be transgender because you really feel that you're living in the wrong body, go for it. That's okay and must NOT be qualified as a mental disorder such as schizophrenia in my books. (damn Amp you ninja)

In fact, this psychatrist himself is mature for psychiatric evaluation, isn't he?

I actually don't like travesty and if you're just doing it for fun (*cough* Bruce Jenner), that feels kind of pointless to me tbh, but I also gotta tolerate that.

Nan's sig! From the previous Secret Santa event!: show
Rating standards: show
1 star: (0 - 5.75 in LDC) These levels need a lot of work. They're totally un-elaborated, and/or inherently flawed due to things like cutoff or enemy spam, or they're untested and there are too many bugs gameplay-wise, in short: Many many things went wrong in such a level.

2 stars: (6 - 9.75) These levels are not terrible, but poor. They're too short, lack scenery or they have errors and/or bugs but it's still barely enjoyable. Again, spend more effort and try to do better. (if it's your first level that I rate two stars, it's not bad. There's a long way you can still go)

3 stars: (10 - 12.75) These levels are about mediocre. They may be still a little bit short, the gameplay is fine but not very original and graphics are also solid, but not breath-taking. Try to keep improving!

4 stars: (13 - 15) These levels are nice, but not the best. Effort has been put into them, there can some professionality be seen in gameplay and graphics, they're a nice experience to play, but there are still things you can do to make it even better. Try to go the extra mile!

5 stars: (15.25 - 20) These are really great levels, those which, as said, I would give more than 15 in an LDC. These suffice many high requirements, and it already goes into subtleties if you want to make them better. These levels are successful all around. Bravo.

These are just general principles I try to follow when rating. Sometimes I don't leave a further comment when rating, most times I do, if you have questions about it, feel free to ask further.
