To me, it sort of is and sort of isn't. It's like low-to-moderate autism, aspergers, and MPD. We don't think of them as disorders, we think of them as normal, and we go as far as to treat the individual as if they are normal.
The "transgenders have mental disorders" thing goes back to a topic of psychology known as gender dysphoria, and while, yes, it may be linked to several mental imbalances(schizophrenia, multiple personality disorder, bipolar disorder, autism, etc.), there is really nothing wrong with it. Hell, if you want to bring up religion, even God is a transgender, he lacks gender and sex altogether.
Personally, I identify as an agendered asexual, because some days I'm overly feminine, other days I'm masculine, and sometimes I'm in the middle. And if there is a chemical imbalance in my neurotransmitters or neurons, I wouldn't be shocked, nor would I be bothered. It's like homosexuality...it's not hurting anyone, so why label it as a disorder just because it clashes against the norm of society?
There's even someone in our little forum cliche who is transgender, yet they are as neurotypical as can be if seen from a distance.
So whether it is or isn't it doesn't matter a given ♥♥♥♥, because unless it breaks our species and causes us to rebreed, no one is affected negatively.
