Who are you?

22:52:52 <@OJ|NP> Maybe it would be prying too much, but I'd be really curious to see a thread where everyone just tells us like everything about their personality and worldviews. Not really to debate or discuss one another's necessarily, but just like, tell everyone about yourself and learn about each other and stuff
22:53:08 <@Venexis> Go make it <3
22:53:15 <@OJ|NP> just compiling it somewhere
22:54:08 <@OJ|NP> meh
22:57:29 <Bryce> Please make that thread someone please and danks

I wanted to make a thread where we can just discuss... ourselves. I guess most of us already know each other to an extent, but compiling our personalities somewhere doesn't appear to have been done yet, and there's always new people who will probably want to know who we all are. ...Okay I'm doing a terrible job at justifying this but anyway I'm just really curious to see how everyone here thinks and sees themselves/the world.

So, that means that we'll be talking about things such as who we are, what we're like, what we believe in, how we view the world, what we enjoy, the things we value in life, our hopes and dreams (whether personal or societal), or anything else felt to be pertinent to general knowledge and understanding of ourselves as people and our views (and only whatever you're willing to share, nobody's forcing you to do more). Multiple posts are fine if you have something you just thought of or wanted to add to a previous post or have had a significant shift in view about.

I don't intend for this to be any sort of philosophical debate/discussion thread or anything, but more of an informative type of thing. If you feel the need to acknowledge someone else's post, go ahead, but be respectful of each other. Remember, your post should be about you. Just tell us about yourself. Let's all get to know each other a little better.

I'll post soon myself too, I swear

I am stealing Raz's format because I think it is pretty good for explaining myself.

Selected quotes:

"Your question is: why am I so interested in politics? But if I were to answer you very simply, I would say this: why shouldn’t I be interested? That is to say, what blindness, what deafness, what density of ideology would have to weigh me down to prevent me from being interested in what is probably the most crucial subject to our existence, that is to say the society in which we live, the economic relations within which it functions, and the system of power which defines the regular forms and the regular permissions and prohibitions of our conduct? The essence of our life consists, after all, of the political functioning of the society in which we find ourselves.

So I can’t answer the question of why I should be interested; I could only answer it by asking why shouldn’t I be interested?"

-Michael Foucault, 1971.

"[The universe] cannot be read until we have learnt the language and become familiar with the characters in which it is written. It is written in mathematical language, and the letters are triangles, circles and other geometrical figures, without which means it is humanly impossible to comprehend a single word."

Gallileo, a long time ago. (and hey, it's math!)

Who am I? What am I like?: show
I am Pedro. I am 19 years old, born and raised in Buenos Aires. I'm studying Mathematics at the moment. I've changed a lot since I last posted on the site, so this silent edit will do it. I erased this previous entry, it just wasn't representative of who I am right now. While I am aware that I will continue to change, the jump I made was so huge that erasing it all was simply better.

I am geniuenly optimistic, enjoy seeing others be happy, am a little bit insecure here and there. I adore learning, exploring, talking to others, relating to others and combinatorics ain't too bad either, heh. I am smart. Yeah, know the thing with the idontknowhowmany different intelligences and blah blahb lah, I am smart with the normal definition. I like thinking about logical problems, and I am not too bad at them.

I am also rather nice with others. I treat them as well as I can, I try to help them; respecting my limits, all that good stuff.

I still have some flaws: I am still a little bit dependant, a little bit insecure, somewhat loud at times...

But I enjoy life, and that's worth a lot. I didn't enjoy life, now I do. That's huge.

How do I view the world?: show
I am a skeptic, but don't worry not the "Amazing Atheist" kind that goes around insulting others. I am, in fact, rather skeptical of skeptic comunities themselves and their effectiveness as a constructive tool towards rational thinking (spoiler: they are not, for the most part at least). I value truth and logic quite a bit, and while truth is impossible to achieve scientifically, the closest we'll get is by analyzing claims and putting them to the test.

That speaks about my relationship with knowledge, however I have a different view on life. For me, the only thing I know for certain is that I'm experiencing this that I've arbirtarely named "life". That's all I got going for me, so might as well make it worthy. I don't believe in second chances, I don't believe in someone watching us, this is all I got, and if shall I die tomorrow, shall I die knowing that at least I experienced what I could about this "life" thing.

What are my views?: show
Here we go.

LGBT rights: give 'em 'em rights. Seriously though, people should have privacy to do whatever they desire for as long as does not infringe other people's rights. LGBT rights for the large large large majority of things do not infringe other pople's rights in any concivable way.

Religion: I don't care for religion. It's not that I hate it, I simply do not care. Do not mistake that for the right of professing your religion, that's a right worth fighting for. But for my religious beliefs... yeah... nothing there.

Abortion: This one's tricky. The problem is that while I do support its legalization in pricniple, I haven't given it nearly enought thought, and was sort of preassured to accept it when I was more insecure; now I can give it another try.

Euthanasia: This one isn't. While the legal problems and barriers are complicated, I find nothing that interfiers with my ethics in this topic.

Enviormental care: I'm with all of you guys here, the world is worth protecting, specially if the culprit is ourselves. That said, easy solutions or "night-to-day" ones are not really possible, it's complicated.

Green Eat: ok, I know you guys have no idea what it is. And that's good. It's just my archenemy. It's the typical "we are green... except we are not lawl" company. A pack of lies, green lies.

What do I value?: show
I value a couple of things:

-Authentic solidarity.
-Willingness to discuss and be open.
-Intrest, empathy and compassion.
-Loyality and honesty.

What do I enjoy?: show
Math. Math. Literally math, math problems and math solutions. Also math.

Talking to others, exchanging experiences. Laughing at bad jokes (and if you study math, you'll hear plenty of them), exploring what I was given. Deriving things from a set of axioms using inference rules. Also, I enjoy animation for some reason I cannot grasp. Anime, Western Animation... and that's all. Magic the gathering is quite nice too, and also the study of cuantity, relations, change and space.

Really though, math and math itself.

Bonus!: show
Anne, Bob and Claire put their inicials on the front and back of 150 pieces of papers, but not necessarly the same person will put their inicials on both sides (For example, Bob can put his initial in one face and Anne hers on the other). How many end results are there? (Neither the papers nor the front and back are labeled!)

Ten people (very originally) called A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I and J are on a line. How many arrangements are there such that A is in front of B? (This one is really elegant!)

Consider the numbers 1,2,3,4 and 5. Mary choses some of them. Thomas too. A happy choice ocurrs when they have EXACTLY one element in common. Find the number of happy choices. (I won an alfajor for solving this one "elegantly"!)

I'll stop here.

Who am I?
My name is Bryce Mueller, and at the time of writing this I am 15 years old. I’m male (though I really don’t care what gender I am) and bisexual. I currently live in ‘Murica, but have several countries that I plan on moving to for at least a few years each. It’s not really that I want to travel, but more that I want to immerse myself in different cultures and lifestyles. I talk a lot but don't actually like talking all that much.

My views
Here’s some chatlogs of me because I feel like I did a good job stating my world views in them:
[22:31:11] <Bryce> I've always thought that since it doesn't really impact my life whether or not god exists, why bother
[22:32:31] <Bryce> And this is just my personal views, but I think the idea of the universe witout some controlling force makes it all the more tragic and beautiful
[22:32:43] <Bryce> Life is a chaotic mess that sometimes wonderful things come out of
[22:33:13] <Bryce> The fact that by the tiniest chances a planet was made where we somehow managed to evolve and survive this long as a civilization is amazing

--------------------------------------------

[22:43:22] <Bryce> Really, if your religion inspires you to improve the world, that's great, I don't care what you believe in. But the moment you force your views on someone else or use your religious views as a way to impede the progress of civilization (e.g. gay rights stuff, ignoring scientific research because that would mean something your religion said is wrong), then I don't care you believe in, you're an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

So to restate what I said there, I’m an atheist, and pretty much have been my whole life. I just can’t believe in something and be comfortable without evidence, otherwise I feel like I’m lying to myself. That being said, I’m not opposed to other people having religious views if it inspires them to be a better person.

I personally think the world is more interesting and beautiful without some form of controlling force over it. Every small near impossibility that has lead up to the way everything exists is really what drives my awe and wonder for… well… everything.

Now moving on to not rephrasing chat logs, I don’t think there’s a point to life. I fully accept that one day I’ll be forgotten, and in the end, the only thing I’ve done that will ever matter is bringing the heat death of the universe closer, but to me, that’s okay. I like knowing that my life, and civilization, and the entire universe will have a conclusive end. Something about that is comforting to me. As long as I’m enjoying myself, it doesn’t matter what the end is. Plus when I’m dead, I’m not going to be too upset about nobody remembering me, because I’ll be dead.

I don't really care what other people do. As long as it don't negatively impact someone else and they don't force it on other people, do whatever.

What I enjoy
If you couldn't tell by the most popular and important topic on the forums, Bryce's Gaming Garbage, I like videogames. I like being snobby about game design and all that, even though I don't care to ever get into the games industry. My favourite games have a very specific niche and are really rough around the edges, so chances are you won't like what I like unless you're Ven. I just love experiencing things that are weird and unique from everything else I've seen. Being able to play these kinds of games and be able to gain insight on how the dev thinks and what they like feels really rewarding to me.

Another thing I enjoy is cooking, which I'm also snobby about. I like programming and engineering and stuff, so I'm pretty dead set on pursuing software engineering as a career. When I listen to music I tend to like having prog rock or some form of psychedelia on, but I usually only have music on as background noise. I spend a lot of time reading about scientific discoveries, usually in the field of physics. (Because p hysics is p cool)

If you couldn't guess from the "My views" section, I like thinking about the universe and the vast infinity we live in, usually when I'm laying in bed at 2 in the morning staring up at the ceiling. Space is a cool thing that more people should think is a cool thing.

What I value
Not being annoying or a ♥♥♥♥. Once you get that down, you're pretty set.

I probably forgot to say a ton of stuff, so I might maybe possibly edit this post later.

Who am I and what am I like?
I'm Raiyuuni, formerly LordFalcon. Born and being raised in Rio, I'm turning twenty next January, which is both thrilling and scary. I'm almost wrapping up my second year into my Engineering graduation, which should be a landmark of achievement. Except that I am not entirely up to date with everything going on, not by it being too much of a struggle, but because of my years of being laid back taking their toll.

With regard to socialization: should you be a new acquaintance, I will most likely turn out to be your local hardcore introvert, as I have serious trouble with breaking the ice. Still, while I do enjoy my hours of being alone to an extent, I also enjoy a good chat with hand-picked friends who outlasted the years, as well as online activity in general.

    What are my views?
  • Regarding religion, I was raised Catholic. By now, though, I have dropped most customs, but I will likely never be outright atheistic. It is/was a source of strong positive bonds, so much that the religious studies had helped me with not going bananas through my heated phase (long story short, when I had half this age, I sported a glorious haircut like Nan's (former?) long hair, and proportionate stubbornness). As years passed, though, it became more of a formality than something spontaneous. Obligatory regular gatherings whenever a close relative passed on. There's surely plenty of good values to be reaped from it, but don't expect me to keep a shrine of figures on a drawer.
  • LGBTQ: I don't have anything against it, as in I don't picture myself being uncomfortable with it.
  • I view that I have an insufficient asterisk count on this item.
How do I view the world?
Unimaginably massive and equally crowded, this world houses good and ill alike. No path toward a better reality can be charted without affording a step back in reality, and another further into one's better self. Outlasting is the key.

    What do I enjoy?
  • Netflix
  • Comics, manga, books. No word count limit.
  • Games (Usually something that requires a certain degree of skill.)
  • Soccer (Ridiculously bad at it. But it's still good exercise and an enjoyable game.)
  • Foosball (Pray you are never matched against me.)
  • Art (though it is not necessarily a mutual feeling :P)
  • Music (See occasional contributions to the music thread.)
    What I value:
  • A good serving of honesty and responsibility, especially whenever there's others involved in a common process.

Looking forward to updating with better words!
