I have this problem, and it's pretty hard sometimes.

Not very severe, but I'd guess that my lack of ability to fall asleep in a normal timeframe (usually ends up being upwards of 30-60 minutes) and an average sleeping time of maybe 3-4 hours per night indicates some form of mild insomnia. Whether life/stress-induced, environment-induced, an actual sleeping disorder, or some combination, I don't know, but I've had insomnia of varying intensity throughout most of my remember-able(?) life (for comparison, right now is probably the best I've been doing in regards to sleep in the past several years), and I've been able to adapt to it pretty well because of how long I've lived with it.

It's by no means the only cause, but you may want to consider the fact that you might just have too much light around you at night. It's known that especially artificial light can interfere with your circadian rhythms and melatonin secretion. So, at least for a few nights, try closing your blinds completely, turning off/covering up all light sources possible, and not using your phone or computer in order to see if that might be causing it for you, even if it's hard. (I'm being a bit of a massive hypocrite here because it's nearly 1:00am and I'm using my computer, but that's just because I'm a poor role model who trusts himself to be able to manage living with minimal sleep even though he probably shouldn't)

On the bright side, an inability to fall asleep gives me more time to idly contemplate the universe while I lie in bed in a mental state in which I'm probably more creative and thoughtful than usual due to the effects of sleep deprivation/tiredness, like those I'm under right now.

Everyone gets sleepless nights sometimes, but insomnia is a lot more than this. I don't have it, if anything I sleep a bit too much, so like the opposite of it lol.

You don't know true insomnia until you lucid dream. For six months.

I have it to some extent. It takes a lot of patience and time and wearing myself out to even remotely start sleeping.
Expect something cool here soon!

Personally that is my problem. I have a sleeping disorder and In best case scenario I fall asleep before 1 AM and get more than 5 hours of sleep (I do need to be up by 6 AM). Problem is there are a bunch of times when I find myself past 3 o'clock in the morning and I am still awake. Most probable reason is that at night, I am attacked by hundreds or thousands of thoughts per second, keeping me engaged in them and thus making it impossible for me to fall asleep or calm down mentally until each thought was analysed enough.
True, I probably use my imagination the most during those nights and also find possible to certain problems or find connections between them, which can ease my life a bit, but there are a lot of thoughts that are just "THIS IS WHY YOU REALLY ♥♥♥♥ UP TODAY AND THUS SHOULD PREPARE FOR THIS CONSEQUENCES THE FOLLOWING DAYS" and this is painful.

Insomnia is a pain and if you share my condition, causes may be psychological. Unfortunatelly I did not figure a sollution, so it's just me, my thoughts and the bed. Try do distract yourself from those, if you find it hard to fall asleep, convert the wasted time into something useful: read a book, watch a film/documentary or if you're thoughts are useful and less self-bashing than mine, convert those into something using your imagination, be it a story, a drawing, a theory or so on.

I have problems sleeping too, sometimes. I just kinda stare at the ceiling and think about my day if I try to get in bed. So many things racing through my head. It's hard to relax. I wish life was simpler.
