Okay, so this is something I've been thinking of for a while. People always want bug checks, level designing news, reviews and whatnot. Yet there's no actual official topic for it, is there? So behold:

Yeah, well. Put up with it We have the dueling arena, the ever-changing LDCs (and their vaults), we have the glitch and level code documentation topics, yet we don't actually have a topic with all of people's requests mixed together in an easy-to-find space. (if there is, then I'm not aware of it and I think it's always nice to start fresh, don't you?) That should hopefully answer any questions against this topic. If not, keep reading, because it might be answered further below. Also I'm not doing this to annoy the hell out of everyone, I'm doing this to help you guys in the level designing world. :3

This is an all-new feature, and hopefully it will revive this topic and the rest of the level designer forums. :D







Staff:




Currently we have four staff here, including me.


Current staff:

~MP3 Amplifier~ -- Manager
blackyoshi -- Level editor and judge.
Star king -- Level editor and judge.
lordpat -- Level editor and judge.
MKSTAR26 -- Possible reporter.


These are the jobs that are on offer if anyone ever wanted to become staff...
  • A level editor. Skills = must be good at both graphics and gameplay and can identify when something isn't right about either of them, active, must be a good level designer (so preferably someone from the higher tiers on the tier list), is known by other designers for their skill so anyone who needs this can feel comfortable with that person editing their level, must be committed, and has to be aware that they could cause bugs while editing things and therefore must be cautious.
  • A judge. Skills = must have a balance between being too kind or generous and being too harsh or insulting, easy to understand (if you have grammar problems, do not fret, as long as you can explain something in detail when needed you're fine), analytical, can be strict when needed but must also know when their expectations are too high/low, must give constructive criticism.

If you want to take any of these jobs, then post here and just ask! (or PM me, if that's easier at all) You must have those skills (though it doesn't matter if you lack two, as long as you have the most important ones) and note that I will make the decisions of who gets jobs or not. After all I know each designer and their styles pretty well, so I know what to expect. If you like I can even add names of people here who I would suggest as good for these jobs.

And some time in the future I will need an assistant manager, in case I become inactive for some reason. But I think we're safe for now.

Some changes:

The skills still need to be considered, however it's not as strict. For example, if someone wants a bug check for their level or a review or a banner, people can just volunteer. Staff will now only be needed for judgings and level edits. Reporters also aren't needed anymore. So these are the choices so far...



I'll be choosing whenever I need to, so if you still want to be a judge or level editor, I might consider you if needed. :D

Bug checkers, artists and reviewers however can just be volunteers from the public. Just so it gets more people involved. Lovely jubbly.







Anyways, here are the main attractions!




  • Bug Checking -- This is for any bug checks you want done to your level. Is there a bug you're already aware of and you just want it squashed? Request for this and me or one of the public will come to the rescue!
    People for the job: Everyone
  • Level Editing -- Any level edits that you want made to a level of yours (because you're worried about gameplay or graphics), then post the code here and my staff and I will sort it out for you. If you want tips on how to make it better yourself, we also offer that. (but the level MUST be finished, and have its final edits) (this option isn't available to competition entries such as LDCs or duels or WITBLO- just regular portal levels- and we don't suggest you keep these edits either, as they are just visual suggestions- to give you ideas on what it could look like and whatnot)
    People for the job: Staff only
  • Reviewing -- Is it a review that you need? Do you just want some confidence or to know people's personal opinions of your levels when they play it? Then come here! Note: Judgings are different. They consist of an LDC-equivalent score and filled out by professional judges, this however is just a paragraph or so on a personal opinion of your level. And these are less harsh, to be honest. (look below) Also anyone can volunteer to review a level. But you need to be staff to judge.
    People for the job: Everyone
  • Judging -- Or are you going to choose a judging for your level? These are stricter than the reviews, I suppose, because people have to mark it on the more detailed side. For example, when I judged YCED, I gave it a rather low score due to bugs and a few technical issues. However the levels themselves really impressed me, in a review I might put "A completely incredible level series, great work, I would recommend this to anyone", but in the judging itself I'm really looking for details.
    People for the job: Staff only
  • Art -- How about you stick to arty, creative side of things? Does your level need a banner or a titlecard or art of any kind? Ask here and one of our artists will help you! Note: If you have screenshot/s of your level you would like to use in whatever you want, you need to give them to us before we start making it because sometimes it is incredibly tricky to edit it in afterwards and keep it looking nice, and time consuming if you want us to redo it. (however if you don't like it we can still redo it, meaning the artist job also requires patience) Be sure to tell us about any effects you might want too or any additional images.
    People for the job: Everyone





Oh yes and a little thing about the level edits-

It's important that these edits won't be made official. I suppose you can if you really want, but I believe that every level designer has their own style and they should stick to it. Having someone else edit your level will change the style and vary it slightly, which can sometimes be good, but this is more like a visual example of a change in gameplay and graphics in your level. Like, a tip on how to boost your graphics and fun scores. But this must certainly NOT be used for competition entries, such as duels and LDCs currently in progress or WITBLO entries.







The Hall of Mirrors!





This is a rather interesting feature, and something everyone can get involved in. d(^_^)b

This an event run by moi! (and my assistant manager if I ever need one)
These are the steps:
  • Me or anyone who feels like they want to try this out can and it's not going to be in a routine either- just whenever you or I feel like it. Just shout out in the topic if you want a go at reviewing an old LDC entry or an old well-known portal level, but it won't be a WITBLO entrant, so then you're exposed to levels you didn't even know existed.
  • I'll use a special randomiser or something to choose a level for you (or myself) and therefore it's a surprise! However you must promise to take whatever level you're given, or it's not really much fun. ;)
  • The review must be honest, 100% honest. (and constructive criticism probably is useless here as they're older levels) It's gotta be a decent length too, not too brief. (so around 5 lines at least, I'd say, or just an average paragraph size. You know, that kind of thing.)
  • And at the end of the review you must give a recommend score /10, so people know whether they should play this level themselves, or whether they should completely avoid it.

And that's about it! It's only for fun, so don't take it too seriously. :P

Okay. :P I'll see who else wants to have that job and then I'll choose. If this becomes popular I'll most likely need more people to fill in jobs anyways so you'll most likely get it.

I do indeed believe I would like to sign up for the Designer Times as a reporter...if I actually can sign up at this point.
I'm somewhat decent at gathering info, so if you need a bit of scavenging to do, then gimme a holler.

I can help out. I'd like any job other than the Reporter or the Artist, however if I could be something other than the Bug Checker too I'd be okay with that. :3 So yeah, top two choices are level editor and level reviewer, but I can do Bug Checker if you want.

I'm glad to hear that people are so eager to help. :D This topic is aimed for anyone who just needs a bug checker or needs a review for a level of theirs etc. It's supposed to be like a community topic too because of the newspaper and the hall of mirrors. So yeah a lot of this is just for fun. :P

I've got some things to edit in tomorrow- the jobs now are going to be mixed. While bug checking might be one's speciality, they can help in any other areas if needed. (although take a look at the skills needed everywhere else)

I would like to request these following people:
Bug checker - Volcove (if he'd like to, i think he'd be a good one), and Gah forgotten the other person
Level editor - Star, BY
Reviewer/judge - Brawler, SMIC
Reporter - SuYo, MoD, Lordpat
Artist - Luin, LF, Nan

They are my main requests, however it doesn't mean they have to do it or that no-one else can do it. I think those guys would do good jobs though. ;) (and there are lots of staff because it means quicker responses and more reliability)

Well these are my personal ideas so there's no reason why i can't change them.

However i think i'm editing the staff section slightly- i'd like it to just where i have just anyone who volunteers to help out with bug checks or level edits as suggestions, but judging and reviews we'll need official staff. And for art we probably will too. Reporters may not even be needed, i think i'm just going to do the newspaper by myself, but it won't be overly detailed like a normal article.
