You need to leave around 3 squares either side to get the proper use... and there is a certain distance between level transitions/end of level which you have to be in to use them.

I know it's possible to disable item sprites, rendering them inert and thus turning them into background objects, but is it possible to similarly disable tile sprites? (You use simple block-background tiles in one room, but want to jazz it up a bit with some metal plate tiles so it's less plain, but the metal plates are collision objects and can't be used as background filler) If so, how?

It's not exactly flash coding, more SM63 LD coding. If you just play with the code, you may figure something out.

That drops tiles, makes mirror tiles, or creates a whole differen one.

Hey, I know that this isn't exactly a tutorial, more of an advice, but the "How to Make Good Levels" thread is closed, so I thought that I would post this.

In levels where you're making extensive use of the Grass, Jungle, or Cave Tileset, there are different sorts of filler tiles that you put behind or underneath the surface tiles. WHile it is certainly easy to just fill up all your space with one of these, it looks better if you alternate and show some differentiation in the level with these filler blocks. For example, there's a very rocky Cave Tile and one with Two Large rocks to the left side. So Alternate them. With Grass Tiles especially. I mean, there are four of those, people.

Cave in particular looks unprofessional if you just use one tile all the time.

Just a thought. Carry on with the tutorialing.

How to make a forest

Sorry about that, my English not so well……
Part 1.forest
1, you must unlocked the grass tile to make it better, if you don't have grass tiles, it is bad!

2, you need to use 70-80% grass, 20-30% jungle (Although it is not beautiful, if you make it in another tiles, it is quite great!) And you can add another!
However, if you add too much, it is not a forest, for example, you put too many cave tiles in forest, it is a cave, some lazy people will not unlock their tiles, they are fool!
You can make the tile like that: The grass is the bottom, the jungle on the top......

3, you must add some enemy. But do not add too much, it will lag, people will rate you 0!
P.S Now you just add some koopa and shy-guy first! Because I need to add some water, some enemy cannot swim in water and they will die immediately!

4, I want to make a swamp in the forest! So we add the water! Remember the water will come out higher, so make it lower a half tile.

5.but only have the enemy that only can swim, it is too boring, so we use the slopes, and make the ground is higher than the water more than 1 tiles! And put some enemy like goomba, shy-guy on there because they can't swim. But don't let them fall in to the water, so don't put bob-bob!

So open your level designer and check it!

6, so I said, don't make the level too short, as long as you can! You can change grid size by pressing tiles---> change grid size! Someone think the biggest level is 998*998, but not, you can change the code to 999! (The biggest level is 999*999 tiles!) (Although you don't need so much!)

7, so, add some decoration such as rock and trees, the plant....... You can change their angle and mirror them, so if you make the tree only appear a corner, it will look like a leaf, so try to use it!

8, you have plant, so you must have some butterflies; try to add more butterflies and plant, fewer enemies! You can also make some area that was hard or waste time to go, and put some bonus near there such as blue coins, mushroom, caps......

9, you can use the falling log or another platform to build a bridge! But don’t overuse the falling log, it not good, try to make the normal log of both sides, make the falling long in the middle, then put the water under the bridge…… put the cheep-cheep in the water and let them to bite Mario!

10. Make a check point or a secret pipe! If your level is long, you need a check point! If you want some riddle, you can make a sign said there was a pipe at where…… so you must go to the sign to found the secret then back for another road! Remember?

11. Yes, if you have brick tiles and castle tiles, you can use it build 1-2 house only in your forest, but don’t too much, It is not a city! Remember, the door should be unlocked, not just open, then close is the same place, then build your house inside, include a table, chair, TV, bed, bathroom…… as more as you can! But don't make it lag!

12. put some pipe to lead to underground , remember the background! Then put some coins, enemies, water..... and another pipe to lead back the upperground! (have you ever play new mario bros 1-1? If you play, you know it!)

13. put some thing that can light the wall and ground! Like the red coins, sliver stars and shine sprite!

(Like superyoshi wrote) Disable: (You should disable that! (then copy your code, paste in something that can put a lot of things! For example, if you build a mario, the code is "|1,X,y|" (x and y is the place to put things) then put a 0 in front of "1". Like that: |01,X,y| Maybe you will ask, if we add a lot of things, how can we found that? Use ctrl + f! )

I think grass is better than jungle......
because the jungle tiles is pepared to you! (That two row of jungle tiles)
somebody is lazy, so they just used that two row of jungle tiles......
so I hate it!
