How to spot bad level before you load it.

Postby TheExcavator » March 21st, 2011, 5:13 am

Hi there. I just thought I'd share a few observations I made on the portal, but first let me make an obvious thing clear, observing the following things does NOT make a level so bad it is reportable. Instead, you'll notice, that playing a level in any of the following categories increase the potential of being bad.
Spoiler: show
1.NAME
What you should look for will include names like "die", "win" , "glitch","expert", "impossible", "you won't beat it" etc. The reason why you should suspect these levels to be bad should be quite obvious. May as well tell the most obvious tip-off name. "My Level" Which indicates that the author was too lazy to even use the Course Info tab.
2.AUTHOR
This is just to say when you see a large cluster of levels by the same author, that it is hard to trust them.
3.DESCRIPTION
The description is the least to go on since it is not required, but you'll notice that some bad levels have bad descriptions (you know like blank ones).

Did I miss anything, if so then post.

Well, this is a good tip sometimes, but I have played some levels with a bad name, but a great actual level.

So you're implying you disagree with the rule, and YOU make bad levels? :P

I've seen that too. Maybe it's just a deal called expectations, and how when the outside, "the name and description", are bad you expect the same thing to come out of the inside, "the level".

Hmmm, seems I've been judging books by their covers.

Very useful, but you can add an other tip : Look out for comments. If there is some comments saying : "It's impossible" or "You copied this level", it's not good. Look also the rating, but that doesn't always mean it's a bad level. I've seen bad levels with an high rating, and good levels with a bad rating.

I actually recently played a level that said lolololololololololololol. It had minor enemy spam, but it wasn't that bad though...

Just forgot last time I posted :

Yeah, that's true, I agree. But only for "die" or "win". Name including "glitch" are not always bad (I can give an example : There is a level, while I'm writing this, which is at the top, called "Glitch Castle II", but I won't tell the one who make it :awe: ) But you can also add that names including "expert" or "impossible", or "you won't beat it" USUALLY are bad levels. What is inside the level ? A sea of lava under your feet, with some falling logs everywhere.

Off Topic: WOW THAT USER IS AWESOME!!! :D

On Topic: I added those names to the guide. TIP: If you seem to run into the same author posting multiple bad levels, then don't hesitate! Visit the author's levels page and start clicking levels. If you notice that the multi-post was a post early in his level designing life, then he MIGHT LEARN (But, it seems that very few people do.) However, if you find out that he has been submitting bad levels from the beginning click the report button and then this will happen to their house:

,or he'll just get banned.
