Well, I've never done this with a transition before, but you can have Mario enter that same "freefall zone" by getting him outside of the level boundaries in any way (doors/pipes, blocks that crush you through a wall, etc.).

So this is where Mario just disappears but you can still hear him walking? Or not?

Well he floats up onto a column, and you can actually SEE the transition. Try it to see!
