Hey everyone,
It's MP3 Amplifier, global moderator of runouw.com. And as I've already explained on my community topic on the forums, I've actually been really wanting to do some audio commentaries for my levels so, just so I can talk about inspirations and stuff because my style is really weird. So...yeah. Well let's get straight to it.
I'm probably not gonna do the signs in this one, because I've only got 10 minutes, so...okay.
Right, here we go. You might think it's really weird why there are green platforms going around everywhere, at the time I thought it was quite...illusion-like for some weird reason? But whatever, I kind of like it though. It kind of represents my old really kind of random style that I used to have, which I feel like I've lost a bit lately, but... I guess that's for the better. And this is the sinking soul, which erm, I think it was just because the meaning- if you don't know, antichesm is a made-up word and erm, yeah, which means basically extracting the soul from a being of some sort- so I guess that was kind of to represent that.
Okay, I will click on this one sign, so yeah. Err, probably take the top path first because that's the one I always take first. Yeah, and as you can see, once again, really kind of unusual tiling patterns. But I guess I like that. Besides, I really quite like this section a lot actually, it's full of really crazy contraptions. These blocks here, for example, they were meant to be in a DNA moving pattern and it never really worked well in the end...but, whatever. I still think it looks alright. And, I like the flashing light, I do have to admit that's probably one of my favourite bits of that section.
It's quite fun, I actually haven't played this in a while so, it's jogging my memory of all the things I did, it's really funny. The actual idea of the story though, taking souls from animals and stuff -oh my god- taking souls from animals and stuff actually came to me because I wrote a story many years ago, called Zodiac Heart, which sounds really weird, but it had the same kind of, uhm...it had a made-up word to represent souls being extracted from people and I know I only wrote it when I was like, 13, but it's really dark. But yeah so, I kind of based this on that but just changing a few things. And ironically in that story, Norma was the name of the evil woman, and in this level, Normabot is the name of the evil bot, so I guess I tried to keep it kind of close. Uh...yeah, that's a bit of information about it.
Well, anyway -sorry that's my dog barking- uh...yeah, okay yeah this is just collecting red coins for this section -damn- it's just collecting red coins for this first level, but it does get a lot more interesting than that -oh my god, I'm so bad at this, I haven't played it in ages- I'm actually doing this on the spot, I'm not doing it, like, y'know I haven't re-taken this at all and I'm gonna try and do it on the spot -thank you, thank you- okay, let's try and get through -no- I'll keep doing it, I will, I will get it, I'm sorry for being annoying -yay- okay.
This part was kind of random, I'm not really sure why I piled items on top of each other. I mean there are just some things that even I don't understand. I know I didn't read the clues' sign, but I know my own level well enough to know that there is a hidden pipe here that takes us to above, so yeah. Uhm, yeah so, the reason I'm doing this first actually is just because this won the 19th Level Designer Contest, so I figured it was probably a big change in history for me, even though well, not including the collaboration in the 17th LDC, that's what I mean.
Anyway, this is the second level now. I just paused it there so I could load it up so I didn't lose time, yay. Right, yeah, the decorations here are probably one of my best at this point. I was starting to mix tiles and items together, to make good graphics, so y'know things like moving triangles for some reason I just found really attractive, not so much as obstacles but as graphics, and I guess that's where I had to improve later on, because well, it was kind of starting to take over a bit.
The annoying bit is coming up now, with those cave blocks I absolutely hate them, I kind of wish I'd changed it but who knew at the time, anyway. I am impressed with the, if I can get to it, the mechanical element of this level- yes! I skipped them. 'Kay, yeah so the mechanical part here I spent a lot of effort on and it was kind of inspired from the Power Plant level by Level4 actually, so I think it's pretty cool. That level has inspired a lot of people lately including newer designers as well, so, yeah, I think if he ever returned to runouw, he would have a lot to be proud of himself for.
Here we go, I just spelt out the words here with some lightning fire, because I love lightning and I love making lightning in a level, it's fun. Now, with this next section I will warn you, the boss is hilariously funny, and I didn't actually intend that to be honest, that was a mistake, I was meant to make it kind of scary and crazy looking, but it ended up looking hilarious, seeeee? It still is hilarious, even now, and I kind of wish I could change it but I think it's probably, quite funny really. Anyway, yeah 'kay. Right, bullet bills go away. I've missed a star at the top of the thing I've just realised so I'd better go back and get that. The bot was kind of inspired, I'm not really sure how to be honest, because well -what I was originally gonna do is have the pipe on the other side then realised you couldn't get back that way- yeah, I'm glad I changed that now. But yeah, the boss itself wasn't really inspired by anything, I just had this idea of a really kind of...skinny being in my head for some bizarre reason, and yet it looked really scary on paper so I wish it could have been that scary in real life. Oh well.
I still think it's really good though, because it was my first level block boss y'know, well apart from a test one I did, so yeah I think that was a good achievement at the time. I really have changed a lot though since the last time I did this, and oh my gosh I need to get up there! Nooo! Okay, this is gonna get annoying! Because I'm not doing this like I did with the hard levels, where I wait until I've got one the full way through, if I die in this I might as well start again but with the commentary on top so I don't really care. Okay, yeah. Yaaay! My life is complete.
Okay, now we're onto the third level. Soo, this really has little-to-no point to it, I just did it because I thought that the idea of having a death figure, with like y'know the silver stars as the eyes, and yeah, just having an idea as like a figure of death of some sort was really quite interesting for me, and I just wanted to play around with items because at that stage, it was before the Super Mario Adventure collaboration in the 20th LDC, so at that point I was still loving randomness.
But yeah, so that's the end of this audio commentary. I ended up blabbing a lot, I kind of realise that, but I just wanted to do one because I thought it would be kind of cool to talk about my inspirations and stuff. Uhm, I'll probably have more to say about the other levels because admittedly this was a while ago now, and yeah, the death theme in the LDC was just quite good for this really cos at the time I wasn't really having the best time of my life so it was quite a good way to put these feelings out there really, in an abstract way, it's just that the end result came out very abstract anyway so...but yeah, I hope you enjoyed it; here's the bottom of the level in case you didn't see it because I probably couldn't zoom out that much so yeah.
Byee.
