The Official WITBLO12 List
Posted: December 30th, 2012, 2:03 pm
Hello, everyone, and welcome to WITBLO12!
2012 has been nothing less than mindblowing for our level designing scheme. Starting off with a massive bang that many believed couldn't be topped in Dark, many people have given the sprawling miniseries a run for its money with marvelous entries that could make this level designing's biggest year since it was pioneered in the freeforums. As such, we will have a recordbreaking tally of over 30 levels competing for the top spot!
Here's the complete roster, as well as some incomplete levels that stand a chance if they're finished.
Sprawling Epics!
Giant Series and Miniseries (3 to 5 levels) that have sparkled in the public eye!
Dark by MessengerOfDreams
Winner of the 18th LDC and many various awards, such as Runouw Votes and Star king's tears, and was the spark that challenged fellow designers to give their all throughout 2012.
Tearing Paper by MP3 Amplifier
Much hyped miniseries by the talented designer lives up to it and much more to become the crown jewel in MP3's Career
An Act of Antichesm by MP3 Amplifier
Another high point by the spunky maiden of level designing was her victory in the 19th LDC with this eerie, unusual series of levels within a deadly factory.
MMMMMMM by Yoshi Boo 118
Held down to 4th only by loading time and lag problems, the highly unique left-field level series has a good chance of reaching the top after its problems are solved.
You Can't Escape Death by BrawlerEX (currently being remastered by its creator)
Also held down by bugs but still lauded otherwise, the silver medalist of the 19th LDC could stand a chance of dethroning its conqueror in the WITBLO list
Mirror Island by Star king and MP3 Amplifier
Yet another victim of bugs and loading time, Mirror Island still stands tall as the highest-scoring Bronze medalist recorded and the highest scoring contest work of both of its creators.
Timpani and Blumiere: The Untold Story by SuperMIC
The second-highest scoring story level recorded and highest silver medalist of all time, this unique, powerful romance story with master-class gameplay nearly tied its victor in the 20th LDC and still beats all but seven LDC entrants in terms of score.
TTOMTC: Levels Tutorial through Obstacle Course 1 by Triple J
Could Triple J's insanely ambitious 70+ piece level series truly come to fruition? If the masterful standard of first four levels are anything to go by, we can only hope it can be done.
Savage Labyrinth by Volcove
The silver medalist of the 18th LDC is a prime example of what Volcove does best- masterful, unique and clever gameplay.
Temple of Heart by SuperMIC
A revitalization of a marvelous attempt in 2011's 15th LDC held back by a myriad of errors, the true talent and potential in the first level of the Temple of Heart series shines through at long last in its true 2012 form.
Eternal Caves by lordpat
Lordpat shows his skill in both design and basic platforming in this wholly mute level series with three stunningly designed cave levels.
In Progress Series
Idealistically, if the creators finish these series by the editing deadline, they will be in fact WITBLO12 Entrants
Lethal by Star king
Should Star king choose to complete the much-buzzed prologue/epilogue unfinished 19th LDC entry, he could have one of the most masterful story-based levels completed yet.
Inscius Memoriam
A stunning amount of simplistic, top-class gameplay is shown in this mysterious unfinished series by BrawlerEX in the 20th LDC, and hopefully a logical completion will accompany the sample of the first and second levels already submitted.
Golden Coins!
Levels whose small size betrays them and the marvelous gameplay within.
Omniquet by nin10mode
Eking out a (tied) bronze medal in the heated 18th LDC, nin10mode shows he still has what it takes in regards to designing skill, with a brilliantly produced puzzle level.
Underwhere by blackyoshi
A surprise winner of the 22nd LDC, blackyoshi's Underwhere, despite its unfinished state, is the perfect example of trademark blackyoshi innovation, fun and design.
Beyond by Volcove
Finally bringing to fruition a fully executed rotation puzzle started by a brave handful before him, Volcove's Beyond does not disappoint with its gimmick.
MAYA'S TEMPLE by FRANCESCO
A small tower level with excellent design, clever gameplay and a bait-and-switch of a final boss that's already become a small legend itself, this left field hit is sure to please.
Paradise Escape by Doram
Even in sixth place, Doram's Choose-Your-Own-Adventure mini-level provided proof that the 18th LDC's freestyle theme brought designers to their most innovative.
Xero by Master1.0
Winner of the 25squared LDC, Master1.0 brings the boss from Top 10 WITBLO11 entrant Secrets of Earth and Sky to complete fruition in this magnificent boss level.
Twin Towers by LordFalcon
LordFalcon continues to show his under-the-radar know how of platforming levels with this tall but sweet treat.
Simply Put...
...these levels needed no words to show off their amazing talent in gameplay.
Shyguy Island by Buffooner
The Winner of the 20th LDC meets the theme of Mario Tributes with a dead ringer for Yoshi's island, using the tile set to its advantage to perfect the pure platformer and provide a surprise revitalization of the 2010 designer's career.
Sliverfall Cove/Marina Ruins by MessengerOfDreams
Surprising everyone, including MoD himself, his rare pure platformer and only block boss impressed judges enough for a win in the Cave LDC, becoming one of the rare successful water levels known today.
Deserted Hell by Blackyoshi
The best example of Blackyoshi's numerous portal platformers, it's a fast paced platformer with numerous original twists and turns that showed a force to be reckoned with.
Big Boo's Rainbow Road by Nwolf
While it gathered another fourth place ribbon for its creator, this 20th LDC level, both a stunning 64 replica and an unusual twist on Mario legend is an example of classic fun and clever game play.
Dragon Valley by Star king
With a gorgeous style based off of Chinese architecture, Dragon Valley stands tall as one of the single uniquest platformers in SM63 history.
Infernal Tower by Kaboom
Winning a surprise bronze medal in the 22nd LDC, Kaboom's simple tower platformer with an intense yet simplistic boss at the end easily satisfies and engages.
Sandy Soil in the Skylands by DarkBlaze
Continuing DarkBlaze's streak of beautifully designed pure platformer levels, this fifth-placer in the 18th LDC fails to disappoint and is a smooth, comforting play.

Standout Entrants that showcase a unique style, massive innovation, growing talent or a highly bizarre adventure.
Into the Depths by Volcove
The ultimate fruition of all of Volcove's vision, as well as of a true incorporation of block bosses, this level is the pinnacle of innovation with an unforgettable boss.
The Blind Experiment by MP3 Amplifier
The Winner of the 21st LDCs via the Storytelling faction shows off both bold innovation, unusual theme and design while finally cementing the trademark that is Amp's design in this original Sherlock Holmes mystery.
Quicksand Cave by zebtrestalala
A clear tribute to his home-time of 2010, the returning soldier creates a prequel to his WITBLO10 runner-up that hearkens back to the good old days in a way both subtle yet noticeable, that will certainly ring a bell with veterans of a different sort.
The Escapists by MessengerOfDreams
While it still lost to its magnanimous competitor Into the Depths, MoD's simpler approach to a storytelling level is a passionate romance whose zeal reflects in the fast-paced, tricky and oft controversial gameplay.
Northern Temple by Volcove
Preferring a different approach to throwbacks, Volcove's adaption to his three year old level of the same name brings it into new age while still maintaining some simplistic gameplay.
Realm of Provodeum 1- Descent by SuYo1141
A myriad of experiments in style and substance by the site's favorite ball of self-loath, SuYo's highly unique, minimalist puzzle level succeeds in bringing something unexpected and unique to the table.
So that's 34 levels, ladies and gentlemen. Who knows, maybe we'll find a 35th before the year ends, aye? Of course, if Lethal isn't finished we will be reduced to 33. Hopefully this won't be the case!
Speaking of the year's end, I bet by the time you're fully aware you're a WITBLO12 competitor, you realize "Oh no! But my level is certainly in no shape to submit to WITBLO now! I need time to edit!" Well, fret not, my competitors, for I understand your plight! In light of this, I have set an editing deadline for you to have time to fix up your levels, and in Star king and Brawler's case, finish them.
Editing Deadline: January 31st, 2013!
Also, please be sure to post in the topic whether or not you have edited your level between now and the 31st! It saves the judges from mandatory replays of every level if they are unable to!
Please note that this is not the submission deadline. Possible entrants will no longer be gauged after January 1st. Any levels made after that date will be in the giant sea of levels considered for WITBLO13.
Of course, man cannot define public opinion on his own, especially as a frontrunner, so to help aid the decisions, I have hired a large team of designing legends to aid the cause!
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome your...
JUDGES!
First, of course, we have the leader of WITBLO itself, four time LDC winner and former global moderator MessengerOfDreams!
Second, we have a legendary woman who, formerly the assistant to MoD, has taken the reins as the new global moderator of the site while expanding her own legend. It's three time LDC winner MP3 Amplifier!
Third, of course, we have someone who is not only a site veteran, not only the constant leader of the entirety of designing culture but a four-year WITBLO veteran, who has participated in every list from 09 to 12. Fresh off of his 18th medal/ribbon, it's Volcove!
Our second newcomer to the list is in fact the longest veteran level moderator, and the person with the single longest tenure in a single site career. One of the most notable personalities of the site, it's Yoshi Boo 118!
Our fifth judge is the shock sensation of 2012 who truly defines what this year is about. Fresh off an LDC and mini-LDC victory, it's the greatest portal legend of the site's history, blackyoshi!
Our final judge is the designer who perhaps heralded the entrance into the new age in 2011. With an exuberant personality and skill to match his ego, it's our newest level moderator, designing legend Star king!
This giant roster of judges will not only assure all 34 levels get the attention they deserve, fellow judges will provide backup in the case of notable deadlocks or ties, perhaps most notably in the frontrunners' category. It all depends on how it will go down, aye?
Thank you for your time! I ask the moderators sticky this. I wish all entrants the best of luck, and I hope everyone is prepared to top this in 2013!
