I need help with my background

Hi, as I mentioned in my welcome topic, I'm working on a big project which is ca. 30% done. I want the bowser castle background since it's basically designed as a fortress (though it's multithemed), and I've increased the y-size till ca. 80 grids upwards. Notice, upwards, not downwards. And while testing I've seen that the background ends up very fast and at the top there's already the fire field sky, which I don't want to happen. I've also seen that the fire castle background works better. And now, this seems spanish to me: Triple J's "Level 9: Triple's Castle #1" has a y-size greater than 300, but the castle background ends only from the ca. 200th grid from below, and the start position is right down. So Triple J, did you really increase the y-size downwards till 300+ and started designing after that or is there a way to make this background larger by editing the code or else :?: Please let me know.
Also, do you guys have similar experiences with other backgrounds? Would be also nice to know.

1 star: (0 - 5.75 in LDC) These levels need a lot of work. They're totally un-elaborated, and/or inherently flawed due to things like cutoff or enemy spam, or they're untested and there are too many bugs gameplay-wise, in short: Many many things went wrong in such a level.

2 stars: (6 - 9.75) These levels are not terrible, but poor. They're too short, lack scenery or they have errors and/or bugs but it's still barely enjoyable. Again, spend more effort and try to do better. (if it's your first level that I rate two stars, it's not bad. There's a long way you can still go)

3 stars: (10 - 12.75) These levels are about mediocre. They may be still a little bit short, the gameplay is fine but not very original and graphics are also solid, but not breath-taking. Try to keep improving!

4 stars: (13 - 15) These levels are nice, but not the best. Effort has been put into them, there can some professionality be seen in gameplay and graphics, they're a nice experience to play, but there are still things you can do to make it even better. Try to go the extra mile!

5 stars: (15.25 - 20) These are really great levels, those which, as said, I would give more than 15 in an LDC. These suffice many high requirements, and it already goes into subtleties if you want to make them better. These levels are successful all around. Bravo.

These are just general principles I try to follow when rating. Sometimes I don't leave a further comment when rating, most times I do, if you have questions about it, feel free to ask further.

The backgrounds are already pre-made, so you cannot change them.

I don't think it matters whether you increase the level's size upward or downward, but changing the specific y-size will shift any close-background's position (same with the x-size).
When I made that level, I took advantage of the fact that--by default, the Bowser's Castle background is only partially below the center-position of the whole level (however, some of the other backgrounds have a different offset), meaning that if the level is tall enough, but not too tall, the top of the close-background will be exposed before the bottom of it can show.


Essentially, if you want to prevent the "roof" from showing, either shorten the level's y-dimensions, or--if you happen to want your level to be "tall," divide any specific elevations between level transitions. (However, doing this effectively may be a little tricky for newcomers, but there are ways to make it run more smoothly.)

Thanks for helping me. I've noticed that you've left some space unused ad the top, so it is the solution just to enlarge the y-size more than necessary, right?

Apparently--and I wasn't thinking of it myself, but making the level taller than necessary actually does give you more of the Bowser's Castle's height, from the bottom (as in, you reveal more of the background out from the bottom of the level, especially after having already revealed the "roof.").

If this is what you're referring to, then yes, it is a solution. (To be honest, that wasn't what I was initially trying to explain, but apparently that happens to work too, as you've just pointed out. :3)
