On other more peaceful news, I am making further edits to my entries. I need to check the LDC judgings I got to make sure I fix any bugs, it's pretty mediocre compared to my usual work but hopefully I can repair my dissatisfaction if I just improve on little things here and there. d(^_^)b

Now, before I leave this part of the forum for another week or so to write more college applications, might I just add:

Since the dawn of the site, people have rarely advertised or otherwise promoted their own levels, except through chat or signature field. Yet a lot of us made it through the several WITBLOs with at least one level. Could it be possible that maybe we can distinguish what puts a great level from a good one? Could it be possible that you overlooked something, or are simply blinded by your own ego?

Probably. I say this not to spite you, but because I see myself having some similar sort of pride in the past.

I still liked my 7th LDC entrant based on how I remembered it; the way it played out in my head, it was some epic and cinematic quest through a supposedly caved in castle, trying to fix an airship and ride it through a lingering tower without being left behind, and making a final push upwards while solving some elaborate puzzle.

Then I looked back last week and saw a few things that I could now see as confusing and unnecessarily complex. The platforming I saw was tight and precarious(at the time, I liked using half-blocks and forcing you to slide underneath, perhaps a bit too much), and the final puzzle I saw was now undecipherable.

I'm still proud of the 15/20 Suyo gave me, and the modest 12/20s from Blab and YB, but now I can see where the 7/20 came from. I'm always proud of all the levels I make when I make them. The difference is that I just let what comes come.

Looking at the level in question, I can see why you like it, but I also see why everyone else doesn't. Hopefully, these words will -- in the midst of a what seems to me a cyclical pattern of arguments -- sound more like reason to you than everything else here seems to be to you.

Now please -- and I say this to everyone -- get along so I'm not tempted to waste away what little time I have to prepare for college here, typing words that will only reach a few dozen pairs of eyes.

Yes. There are things that don't work out well in particular, but that's the status quo right now. However, I'm afraid MoD won't give me a chance at all. Please, MoD, overcome your inner temptations for once and let me try something, and try to listen a bit.

TIL: This year I'll simply be making easier levels. :P

No, Shroom, you don't need a chance from MoD. What really matters is if you're really sorry and wishes to change and be a better person. Anger sometimes can change our thoughts and our reactions because we're just humans, and we're all prone to fail.

And I'm sure that MoD, even still a little bit angry, will forgive you and forget all of this discussion if you try to be a better person and care a little bit more about others, because we're just humans, and we're all prone to fail.

Haha, trust me, overly hard levels don't go over well here (I've tried). Average levels with some minor difficulty spikes should be fine though.

For now, I wouldn't try so hard trying to get another WITBLO entrant. Sure, there's WITBLOAT, seemingly marking the end of this string of ceremonies, but that doesn't mean you can't make levels simply for the sake of impressing level players.

I've been looking at the past discussion...

I find it odd that you all keep saying that Supershroom has "overconfidence", when you're probably looking for a term such as "arrogance", "vanity", "hubris", or "egocentrism". You are not trying to imply that Supershroom is confident that his levels are good. I'm pretty sure that a lot of people here are like that. What you are trying to imply is that he thinks his levels are above everyone else's, maybe. That he perceives himself as superior. Something like that.

Yes, I just made a post to correct you in the use of a word. Why? I don't know. I got OCD like that.

So yeah, Pro Tip to Supershroom, which is also a Pro Tip I've given to others in the past... If you're making levels just to win awards, then you're doing it wrong.

Truer words have never been spoken.

Lol I agree with that too. I used to make levels just to win awards, I failed every time.
Then one time I decided to actually have fun, pour all my weirdest and most creative ideas into one piece. Along with SMIC I pulled second place out of the bag, and since then haven't really truly failed at an LDC (which is still shocking for me sometimes).

Ironically the one time since JTTA where I didn't enjoy it and made it purely for LDC basis was Volcano of Irony and that had my lowest score of all time yet somehow still placed. (Karyete's part deserved more points tbh :p) It just goes to show that you really need to have fun, because if you have fun, then it's more likely that the players will.

It might not be my place at all to comment here but I've been trying to monitor more than just serious discussion and the news/site discussion subforum in order to have a better idea of why there's so much conflict here lately (and by extension, how to best deal with it), and that bit about entering just to get a shiny medal is especially relevant when considering how much of a complete flop the 28th LDC was.

I had a great idea that I was excited to make, then things exploded. Suddenly all desire to participate in the contest or even so much as look at the designer was gone- why the hell would I want to be a part of that, let alone attempt making something great if it's just going to become the centerpiece for a battleground?

There was a lot of people excited for it at the beginning. Toward the end, a month and a half after the planned deadline if I'm recalling correctly, we had four entrants and struggled to find judges who would be willing to cover such a small turnout. A record low.

What I'm trying to say is, maybe it wasn't entirely "writer's block", and it certainly wasn't because of a bad theme or host. Perhaps it's because making anything under that particular set of circumstances was just... not rewarding. Not entertaining, not fun, and absolutely without question not worth it.

Remember when people used to start up the designer to create worlds instead of destroy the one we've got here fighting over who's better?

Strange.

A lot of my early attempts at LDing were just for fun as well, and not so much as focused on winning medals. But I guess execution plays a role in everything, even making something everyone can have fun with.

But now that I think about it, I had a lot of fun designing the Darkwater levels.

♥♥♥♥, why did I say I was going to retire?
