You know, that reminds me of that speed run that I planned but never really got around to doing. Anybody still interested in trying this out? o_O

Yeah, that sounds good to me. You should specify some checkpoints, though, like "speed run with all stars" or something, because obviously there are people who can sequence break and beat it with one or zero stars.

I once raced my brother to see who could finish fastest…can't remember what my time was…somewhere between 2.5 to 3 hours, I think.

All 64 shines in 3 hours? o_O Jeez...
But I think the important question is....DID YOU WIN? : D

I think that's the point of a "speed run": to finish it is quickly as possible, hehe. With sequence breaks, the path should look something like:
1. Finish Tutorial #1. Place the shine in the shine room.
2. Get any one shine from Bob-omb Battlefield or Secret of the Mushroom (whichever is fastest).
3. Enter Shifting Sand Land room and get Hover FLUDD (through the secret passage).
4. Take sun shortcut with FLUDD.
5. Complete Bowser's Castle (although you don't have Turbo/Rocket FLUDD, I think you should be able to get through the Turbo path with just Hover...hopefully...).
6. ???
7. Profit!

Yes, I did. And it wasn't 3 hours non-stop (though pretty close).

I actually beat him twice!

I know there are already some very fast speed runs online with the sequence break in it, but I think that defeats the purpose. I mean, a sequence break automatically defeats the purpose of the game. It's obviously difficult in its own rites, but they're not really comparable - you just end up with two different challenges, "beat the game with 64 stars in the least time" and "beat the game in the least time." If I took one hour to beat the game with one star, and you took two hours to beat the game with 64 stars, yours would obviously be more impressive.

My first challenge still stands. How many coins can you guys get legitimately through story mode, not the level editor? Raid the Mush Room, scour the castle, and take it all to a Secret course and try to get the most possible coins. That should take less than three hours. :D
