I think I just did a wall jump.

So... here's my story.

I was playing some of the classic levels by 00austinrules00 right? I played "I shouldn't be alive" and went into the bunker. I jumped against the wall while the shine sprite gaining power from the red coins cutscene had some lag and didn't load.

Now, the game finally loaded and did the cutscene. Now, you freeze in mid-air during this scene. However, as most of you know, if you dive, Mario will dive during the cutscene and propel him forward a bit until the cutscene is over. However, I held down, and was pressing the arrow in the opposite direction.

And what happened after that?

He got launched off the wall. He jumped about 3 squares into the air and a considerable distance in the direction I was facing. Now, chances are this is just a glitch and not just one of those "only developers are supposed to know that the wall jump's code is still in the game" thing.

What if the wall doesn't matter? Does this mean that in red coin shines in story mode you can do an even higher jump to get to normally unreachable without a door areas? Could I have just broken Mario 63 and opened a new realm for speedrunners?

Or am I just dreaming?

P.S, this is the level I was playing: http://runouw.com/levels/viewlevel.php?id=9779

I think this is what happened:

Just as Mario gets up from crouching (or diving), if you attempt to backflip jump at that very frame which he starts standing, you'll perform a backflip jump without flipping, but the resulting jump matches your description: 3 tiles up, a lot of distance (this jump glitch takes you up to the exact height as the lowest double jump [without holding the "up" key].).

A VERY bizarre glitch WITH this glitch is done by doing it in shallow water. If you do that, you'll actually perform a very strange "super jump" that takes you up to somewhere around 7 or 8 tiles (I know, wow.). Try it. :P

So it kinda works in the same sense as the backflip glitch, huh?

If you lie down and get back up immediately, the exact frame when he stops crouching and he gets up, if you do a backflip... then he does a backflip, but the backflip animation doesn't play. Because, technically, he would backflip because he's crouched, so he jumps really high, but... he's standing up, it's just a normal jump.

It would be cool if SM63 recorded everything you did (jumps, strokes while swimming, deaths, 1-ups gotten, or backflips) and just abused that glitch to make it so that you can brag to your friends saying "I BEAT THE GAME WITHOUT BACKFLIPPING. WORSHIP MEH."

Edit: That's exactly what you said. Derp.

Yeah. Shallow water is glitchy as eff. You can do double jumps in it, you can jump really high in it, you can make an infinite splash, you can use it to create noise with something that doesn't exist if you make it really really small, yeah.
