As the subtitle says, it only works on the downloaded, flash version.
Lemme explain in a spoiler
Spoiler: show

This explains all. While there's that transparent letterbox, the game looks 16:9 with the stats as they are, in their locations. I was thinking, what will happen if Super Mario 63 was truly 16:9? And how will it look like if it's truly 16:9...?

By the way, the transparent letterbox is no transparent when it comes to the:
  • Title Screen
  • Main Menu
  • Boss Battle, beginning or finished, Kamek or Bowser, where you could see people speaking (any boss other than those 2 has the screen 16:9)
At here I'm unsure of the aspect ratio (maybe 4:3...)... I know Runouw now refuses to update the game but if he refuses, then it's okay. At least the Flash version can be 16:9. (btw, at here the eco Utility results in the FPS going down a nosedive, so I keep the game screen small enough to reach any part where I believe the game's aspect ratio could change fast enough)
I think I have no more to say.

You're not supposed to be able to see outside a certain area (notice how the edges are darker), so the game is technically still 4:3 but with the downloadable version you can expand it out to 16:9. Basically this allows you to see stuff that was either cut from the game or is placed just out of sight and put into play later in the game.

Sure it's 4:3, and one shouldn't see what's on the edges, but the whole thing is: The land. The land is okay when it's 16:9, it's just the stats, background, Pause Menu, and all that... Man, there must've been something like "Widescreen Optimization" or like that, which makes the game truly 16:9 (I can't imagine that...), but it'll just be imaginary for now...
