Looks pretty nice. I'm currently making a shooter game for Gamemaker too, but since i'm using a peice of crap that is a five year old PC, I can't really get much progress. (Also the fact that it randomly shuts down!)

To make a moving sprite Go to the sprites And make a new Sprite Mash the moving Sprite into one Moving Sprite And when you want the Character to move Try this Go into the object of the character And go into the moving Press event and Choose "Change sprite" and choose The moving sprite now make ANOTHER one for the Right Or if you worked on the right first Left one and do what i told you for this one if some one already told you How to do this then Im dumb
