Me 50%. If you just want to make simple games, GM is great for you, but if you want to make bigegr games GM sucks because of it's suckish performance and non-existant cross-OS-combatibility. I recommend making simple games in GM first with Drag 'N' Drop, then GML, and from GML you can easily learn other languages like ActionScript3, C++ or Java.
Also, use <6. Since YoYoGames took over with version 7, GM sucks, mainly because the made performance even worse and a part in the EULA which says all characters in thegames you make are copyrighted to them.
