To my knowledge, planting the different shards together was the method of forcing fusion between gems. Obviously the shards can function on their own, but they appear to be more powerful as fusions... No big surprise there. Homeworld, or specifically Peridot, was likely experimenting with creating minions that could be utilized to wipe out the CGs/life on Earth.


Also, maybe I'll have to rewatch the episode, but I'm still pretty sure the weird colouring was just because of the lighting. Every setting has a slightly different palette, and a dark indoor location with bluish hued lights is probably going to have a pretty noticeable effect on the palette.

I'm pretty sure she's just working on creating slaves, for mining, daily tasks, or their main use of as an army. I seriously doubt Peridot is planting them, and they just escaped the kindergarden.
