Album Review/Waking Up - OneRepublic

I recently fell in love with this unique pop album. Let's do thiss..

Track By Track

Made For You - This is one of my favorite on the album. It's a great way to introduce the sound of this new 1R album. Plus, it's the title of my upcoming Press Start chapter! Hah! 9.7/10

All The Right Moves - This is the first of four singles released from this album. And there's a reason for that. The percussion, the voice, the violins...etc. Near perfect... 9.9/10

Secrets - Another single. Not as great as the above song...but still good. And they use violins!.. 9.3/10

Everybody Loves Me - A nice guitar centric song. Again, the focus on the percussion really drew me in. 9/10

Missing Persons 1 & 2 - Very emotional. Didn't hit after a few listens, but this song is one of the best on this CD. 9.6/10

Good Life - A song that just makes you want to walk down a street and dance. Their newest single. Great! 9.8/10

All The Time - Beautiful. Less focus on percussion. But you can still hear in the background. Sneaky:). 8.8/10

Fear - Piano! One of my favorite instruments...so this song gets props. This is another slow song, but they know how to balance an album out perfectly. 8.9/10

Waking Up - The most rock-ish song on the album. Well-done, but there are some better tunes. 8.8/10

Marchin On - Another single. Percussion is the focus again. This is kinda like my theme song for Japan right now. Hey, single for a reason! 9.7/10

Lullaby - The slowest and most floaty song on the album...as the title suggests. His voice is really nice on this song. There's no real percussion in this song, but I don't think it needs any.. 9.2/10

Such a great album...OneRepublic is one of the few bands/artists that give me hope for the future of pop music. If you like truly good music, you'll purchase.

FINAL: 9.3

Album Review/Teenage Dream - Katy Perry
Requested by Kirby_999

Yea, I'm going to pretend that I'm an avid clubber. So...Let's...party..

Track By Track

Teenage Dream - One of the most over-played songs of 2010...but it may get stuck in your head for a while. A decent single. 9/10

Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) - Hah. This makes me laugh. A song about having a crazy party on Friday. At least it's better than that other song about Friday...*shiver* 8.5/10

California Gurls - Seriously...this song was played to the max. Admittedly, it's catchy. But that's not what makes or breaks a song. If this is the anthem of the West Coast the...sorry Saxman and MoD. It also has an identical beat to a song that I have to review later. Enough ranting. 8.3/10

Firework - If this we're accoustic, maybe I'd be more inspired to "let my colors burst." 8.7/10

Peacock - No. This song is kinda...sh*tty. 5/10

Circle The Drain - I like this song. I'm not sure why. 9.1/10

The One That Got Away - Nah. Not feeling this one. To sticky and sweet. 6/10

E.T. - Her newest single...is...creative? It's just gonna be overplayed...and it's not that good already. 7.5/10

Who Am I Living For? - This one is okay. 8/10

Pearl - A song about a lover hiding her pearliness cause of her partner. Hmm. 8/10

Hummingbird Heartbeat - The dirty lyrics of this song are hidden by pop guitars and buzzing synths. The cheeriest song about sex I've heard. 8.5/10

Not Like The Movies - What? Katy Perry...did a completely organic ballad....Best song on the album.. 9.3/10

I didn't like it. But pop-eaters will.

FINAL: 7.8

My Music Update

PostPosted: June 5th, 2012, 6:56 am
by Panik!
I've been all too busy lately for Runouw, and I wish I could be on here more. I'm going to start making an effort to get on here and do something productive every week. So how about bringing this back? But I'm thinking about changing it from just music reviews to my weekly music update + reviews. (what I'm listening to, what I was looking forward to, albums I like, albums I...hate) So here goes :D

Singles
The movie Snow White and the Huntsman is coming (came?) out some time soon (ago?) and the trailers did look pretty epic... However, when I listened to the soundtrack to find that it's not all lonely Taylor Swift songs and actually epic orchestrated pieces, I was pretty taken aback. But the last track won most of my praise: "Breath of Life" by none other than Florence + the Machine. Still not over her album Ceremonials, I listened to the track and became addicted. Florence's voice is perfect for the orchestral background music and "Breath of Life" is, without a doubt, the most intense song she has ever done. She should do a whole album based on this sound, not even joking.

After the success of Avicii's single "Levels", I was expecting his new single "Silhouettes" to be just as catchy and dance-invoking. But actually..."Silhouettes" casts only a mellow shadow that hides in "Levels" success. The lyrics and chorus are fun, but as for the beat, the electronic hook, and all that Avicii is known for...well, this song just falls flat for me. But hey, every artist has a lackluster single. He's Avicii, now one of the most well-known DJs of his time. He'll be fine.

Breathe Carolina's last album has been oddly, yet extremely popular with me for the last month or two. Why is this album odd for me? It's basically screamo-electro-pop...and it's probably the catchiest thing I've listened to in a while. I could clearly see that BC was taking the mainstream route, and they were very close to merging into Pop Avenue. And with their new single "Hit and Run", they did just that. The song is good for the first few listens, but gets boring after a while. It's pure pop, what else can I say about it? I like it, yes, but it's not their best.

Album Duo

Dreaming Out Loud - OneRepublic
I remember MoD praising the living hell out of this album...so I decided to listen to the whole thing and...wow. OneRepublic is so much more than their single-ridden surface. It's almost hard for me to call this an album really because it's more like an ode to music itself. OneRepublic is just good music, devoid of a solid genre. I can't really explain what this album means to me, so you're going to have to check it out for yourselves.

Strangeland - Keane
I haven't heard much Keane before, but I'll take a serious listen after hearing this entire album. This is music to listen to on a fast day, just tunes to listen to in order to chill out, sit back, and say, "Life is good." Give this album a look too :)

Also, if any of you guys and girls have Spotify, you can find me on there. I have a huge playlist of electronic tracks built up if you wanna listen :)

Are you still taking requests? If you are, d'you mind looking at Silversun Pickups' newest album Neck of the Woods if you haven't already? I listened to the entire thing multiple times when I got it, it's amazing. Hopefully you'll like it, too. :D

Hi again :D It's review time ;)

Silversun Pickups - Neck of the Woods

Knowing the band but not the album, let's get started...

Track 1 - Skin Graph - A very good start to the album. The lack of the structure common in most modern music (verse>chorus>verse>chorus>etc.) makes it stick out. Actually, that's what makes this band stick out. 8/10

Track 2 - Make Believe - Interesting lyrics, an awesome guitar solo, and it's catchy too. 8.5/10

Track 3 - Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings) - Two titles that really don't make sense together, but the song isn't all too bad. If I'm not mistaken...I'm pretty sure this is about the whole "say 'Bloody Mary' 3 times in a dark bathroom with a mirror" urban lengend lol. Interesting... 8/10

Track 4 - Busy Bees - Probably my favorite song so far into the album. I can't really place why but there's definitely something about it that catches my attention. I suggest checking it out; it's spectacular. 9/10

Track 5 - Here We Are (Chancer) - From the beginning of the track, I could tell this song was going to take a more mellow turn. It's okay, but dull in comparison to the first 4 tracks. (Also, first song on the album that's less than 5 minutes O_o). 7.5/10

Track 6 - Mean Spirits - Okay, this one beats Busy Bee. The music is more intense in this one and it works with his voice. I'm liking the vocalist so far; he's versatile. 9.5/10

Track 7 - Simmer - Longest track on the album (6:49) and it starts with an electronic beat. I'm excited. The song switches from an ethereal tone to the more open sound of the previous track. This one ties with it. 9.5/10

Track 8 - The Pit - I'm liking these more electronic intros :D This song isn't spectacular, but it's good enough to earn... 8.5/10

Track 9 - Dots and Dashes (Enough Already) - Catchiest song on the album for me yet more calm than the other 9.5's. 9.5/10

Track 10 - Gun-Shy Sunshine - This track is also mellow but catchy. Definitely shows the flexibility of the singer's voice. We're getting there :D 9.5/10

Track 11 - Out of Breath - For some reason, the title of the final song makes sense since no song on this album was less than 4 minutes. I feel tension building in the background and the lyrics and vocals are great. This is an awesome way to end an awesome album :D 9.8/10

Final Score: 8.8

Looks like I have more than "The Royal We" to get on my iPod. Thanks for recommending this Avo. I suggest you check out the band Metric and their new album Synthetica

Now it's my turn.

Album/EP Duo

Bangarang - Skrillex
I admittedly love Skrillex's dubstep and house songs and Bangarang is his best work. My favorite song on the EP would have to be "Summit" just because it's beautiful...and it's electronica. "Beautiful" isn't usually a word you hear associated with Skrillex. I advise you take a look.

In Search of Solid Ground - Saosin
I found Saosin through Pandora radio and jeez. I can't explain how awesome their music is. The Post-Hardcore genre is full of copies and Saosin has such a different sound. Their instrumental talent combined with the incredibly gifted vocalist gives them an advantage. But what won me over were the piercingly cold melodies of their music. Take a listen :3
