What really compels me to music is the visual I get for it, whether it be music videos in my own head, great music videos or visuals in real life, or when I hear a song during my travels that totally relates to where I'm at or what I'm thinking at the moment.
Example: Coldplay's video for "Yellow." The video consists of nothing but Chris Martin walking along a beach during the transition from Dusk to Dawn. It's simple, and some people may be bored the first time seeing it, but it has a stunning atmosphere that sticks with you.
Another Example: TV on the Radio's "Wolf Like Me." The song itself is like a sudden can of spinach with me, I can actually run a 3 minute half mile with it because of its fast pace and action-film feeling. It's got such an acrobatic speedy feel that I envision the music video pretty much consisting of two people far away from each other running to each other, leaping over obstacles and fighting through problems to reach each other.
Exhibit 3: On my way to a meeting once, I crossed a bridge to downtown with fog so thick you couldn't see anything but the bridge, and I happened to be listening to Super Mario Galaxy's Teresa Waltz, which we know as SM63's Boo Mansion. Chilling moment.
