MX's Media Reviews and Content Advisories

Postby Dr. Ocsid » May 27th, 2012, 6:10 am

Okay, so in this topic I am going to do various reviews of Media, such as Books, TV Shows, and Movies.

So, For my first review, I am going to review a show called...

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. So first, a little story about how I came to like the show.

Okay. So, My Little Pony. Something that made my skin crawl when I was younger.
I despised everything that had to do with the show. I hated when my sister
watched her My Little Pony dvd's, like "A very minty christmas". Ugh.
Fast forward a few years and I see My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic come out.
I'm thinking "Eh, jst another MLP show." I leave it alone for over a year.
After a while of seeing all the brony fanboy-ism, I decided to see what all the fuss was about.
I go online and search for an episode of the show, I start watching the first episode. I didn't really know what was going on.
I got bored and turned it off. I will regret that decision forever. Fast foward another year. About... April 2012.
MLP:FIM appears on netflix. I mostly ignore it. Then my sisters started watching it. I decided to ry watching it with them.
After I saw a few episodes, I was amazed. I thought "How could a show based
off of something I hated a long time ago be so good?" Then I realized. A show doesn't have to be the same
as all the other shows I like to be a good show. This show taught me to try new things. I think
you should too.

Okay, so now the review.

Looking back on me thinking "How could this show be so good?", I realized something else. There are plentry of reasons.
First, the animation. The animation is very smooth and filled with subtle details such as manes and/or tails
bouncing around.. What surprises me more is how they made the show with such good animation...
In flash. Shows like Family Guy (A stupid show in my opinion) use
proper animation programs, and yet have terrible animation. This show has better animation than any show
I have ever seen.
Second, the humor. Because every cartoon needs humor, right? This show uses all kinds of humor. Some kinds I can't explain.
However, a large part of the humor uses cartoon violence. That's right. You didn't think violence would be in a My Little
Pony cartoon, did you? The phrase "My little pony" and the word "Violence" are like opposites. Black and white. Apples and
oranges. Good and evil. But enough comparing opposites. This show uses Tom and Jerry-style humor such as:
Ponies getting smashed by several havy falling objects, such as flower pots, anvils, hay carts, and pianos,
Smashing into/through walls, Twilight sparkle getting so angry that she bursts into flames, etc.
Other kinds of humor include Breaking the fourth wall, completely going against character's personalities, and also
commonly using Pinkie Pie's silliness (And randomness) for humor.
Third, the characters. Let me give you each main character's personalities.

-Twilight Sparkle- This unicorn is probably the most focused-on pony in the series. She is a very talented magic user, the
most talented out of the mane six. She is friendly and always wants to help with things. She is also kind of a geek and
studies a lot. And I mean a LOT. She owns a library in ponyville where she keeps her books. She also has an assistant,
a baby Dragon named Spike who helps out with pretty much everything in the library. Spike is also (Somehow) able to send
and recieve written messages with his fire breath. Twilight represents the element of magic.

-Rainbow Dash- Rainbow is the fastest pegasus in Equestria, having a Wing Power of 16.5, compared to most other pegasus's
wing powers of 8-10. She is kind of tomboy-ish, and prefers everything to be "Awesome and cool". She is also good at
fighting, as seen in a few episodes. She lives in the clouds. She represents the element of loyalty. She is very loyal to her friends and never leaves
them when they need her.

-Fluttershy- A pegasus, she is almost a polar opposite of Rainbow Dash in terms of personality. Like her name, she is very
shy. She isn't exactly the best flier in equestria, but she can fly extremely fast if she absolutely needs to. Despite her
shy personality, she can get pretty much any living thing do do what she wants by giving them "The Stare". She lives in a cottage on a hill.
She represents the element for kindness.

-Pinkie Pie- An earth pony, Pinkie is very fun-loving and enerjetic. She is always eager to make new friends and knows
everyone in ponyville. She has a "Pinkie Sense" that tells her that something is about to happen, right before it does.
It is also shown that she can break the laws of physics and do things that make no sense, such as counting with six hooves,
floating in the air while shouting, and appearing in completely random places. She lives and works at sugarcube corner,
which is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Cake. She laughs at almost everything, thus representing the element of laughter.

-Rarity- A unicorn like Twilight, she is a fashionista and is very neat. She designs various dresses for lots of different
occasions. She keeps absolutely everything organized. The is also very dramatic and freaks out at small things. However,
she is very generous, giving up her things to make others happy, thus representing the element of generosity.

-Apple Jack- An earth pony, Apple Jack lives and works on a farm and owns an apple orchard. She makes the best apple cider
in ponyville. She is determined and usually wants to do things herself. She almost always tells the truth about things,
thus representing the element of honesty.

Okay, now that we're through each characher's personalities, I think this review is finished. And to all you brony-haters,
I really think you should try watching the show. Try a new thing. And to Azn, Brando, Nin, and anyone else who tried to
convince me to watch anime, don't get all angry about me saying I try new things. I recently tried a few animes, and they
are quite good. But anyways, This is truly the best cartoon, if not the best TV show i've ever seen. I'll admit, there are some
cheesy/girly parts, but the good parts outweigh those by far.

OVERALL SCORE: 10/10
