I use GIMP the most for general editing. PhotoFiltre is only used because of its additional effects.
And no, GIMP doesn't come with all the features used on the earliest signatures. They have to be hunted down in DeviantART, or rather, here. On this category, there are several sub-categories with brushes and scripts for many programs.

I might have some time tomorrow morning and a bit after school to do it, but after it, I'll have to study for final exams until I have the entire Saturday free.

EDIT: After a very short time of work, I got this result. Possibly going to be the best requested sign I've ever made.
