Hmm... If you don't mind me asking, what do you use for an art program?
I use Photoshop CS5 and CS6 Extended.
Those signature bars are nice, though a bit chunky, imo. I prefer smaller, but that's my personal preference.
When going with text backgrounds, I'd suggest reducing the opacity slightly or changing the levels, or even adding a transparent radial or normal gradient. Make use of your blur options, such as Gaussian blur or motion blur. These can help accentuate your main picture, be it a person.
Make sure your color schemes don't blind eyes. Know your color theory well, treat it like your bible. This will make your work look much more professional. I take a graphic design class this semester, and if there's one thing I learned, don't put too much detail into your work-- particularly your background (simple, yet a good contrast to your main 'attraction')-- and distract what you're trying to present to your audience, make use of filters, masks, and other photomanipulation options, and make sure it doesn't make eyes bleed. :)
