Vesoralla's Manga Art

Thumbs up x3

Postby Charcoal » October 9th, 2015, 5:18 pm

I've tried starting art topics in the past, but I just deleted them. I had art in general with those topics, but I'm trying it again by focusing on one area of art. I'm going to focus on manga art. I like the art style, and I've really started to draw it at around my junior year. I just got a how to draw manga guide book to look at and learn from, so I'm all set.
I want to show you all what I can draw, and I would love some feedback, advice, or just some things I ought to work on in my drawings. I really want to do well in this form of art.

Also, if you have an idea of something I could draw or something you want to see me draw, please tell me.

So here I'll post my most recent drawing for you to look at and review:

Ah, the side view. I only recall one "recent" attempt at it, and it didn't turn out to be anything grand, either. But this one does look good for a sketch. You needn't worry about anything being drawn awkwardly by itself - at the worst scenario, time will grant you mastery. Right now, tying them up together is the big deal. Also, I reckon clean linework feels out of reach with pencils only, but try focusing on that first. And, above all else, keep the arts coming. Let the trees know your name and fear you.

P.S. Pay us a visit on the IRC sometime!

Thanks. I'll keep at it. :)

Also, I've been looking at lines of action, and they seem like they'll be helpful. Though I don't know exactly how I should use them or when to put them in. How should I apply those effectively?

These help when you want to add some "life" to your drawing. They help with just about anything, from laying down complex body postures to deciding which way fabric is supposed to fold or stretch. Here's a similar approach I'm trying to use with hair styles:

I'm sure Mark Crilley or Nsio would have a lot to add to this explanation, so go check them out !

Mark Crilley...okay I might look him up and see what he's got...oh and Nsio.

Also, new drawing. I just drew this not too long after making this topic so I put it alongside the previous sketch in the recent drawings.

I went and got a pen to highlight the edges, and that seemed to help. Then I added color, and it was less painful coloring and less of messing up edges now that I went over those edges with pen. I really like how this one turned out, especially the hair.

I don't know what the policy is on double posting here on the General Artwork forum, but I do want to let you all know I drew two more drawings and would like some advice, especially with this first sketch.
One of them is just sketches of feet and hands. I would love to have some reference or information on how to draw hands effectively. I don't think feet will be a huge issue, but if it does, I'll speak up.

See that really bad looking hand at the bottom left? Anything I can do to avoid that?

With the other one, I wanted to put more action in a drawing. Someone punching someone. Yeah, why the heck not.
I think this drawing came out really well.

Punch to the face: show

I would really like some help with hands. They look all right in the second drawing with the punch, but I still struggle. I would like to have it less of a struggle. So is there possibly a good tutorial on hands? I've seen a video from Mark Crilley drawing hands, but are their other good tutorials?

Not any kind of Master in hand drawn art, but you should make the fingers a little thicker and closer to each other in the top right hand and also in the other hands.

Thicker and closer. Okay, I'll keep that in mind.
...
Yeah I can definitely see they need to be what you suggested.

EDIT: 2 new drawings

Here they are:

I took FF's advice and drew the circled hand thicker and closer. It actually looks a lot better. I tried more hand gestures/poses. They're still hard to do even after watching one of Mark Crilley's hand tutorials

Probably the best female drawing I've done by far. I drew her to look sorta similar to Kallen Stadtfeld from Code Geass.

This was based on a cosplay I did in my school's anime club. I called it the Demon Ninja Feline. |:)
Yeah...very creative...not really.

I'm going to try to add backgrounds to my drawings so that way I can get better at drawing other things other than people.
